I have read you can use the onboard SATA port on your motherboard. Is this true or do you have to buy a Via pci sata card?

In most cases "YES". I have on two different pc's with XP. The first was a via chipset and my latest pc is an Nforce chipset. I do still experience some "freezes" but none yet with JF 1.51.

How can you check your chipset?

you could check the specs of your mobo... or look for a program called aida32, that might help... regardless the best way to check if your chipset is going to work for you it to just try it. plug into one of your onboard sata ports, open jungle flasher and see if your drive is there. better yet, I found the xtractor software was easiest to learn what ports on my pc were any good, then I switch to Jungle Flasher and set that port as default and kick the sh*t out of the drive until its recognized. keep trying you will get the hang of it.

Thanks. Now just have to get the case opened, heard that's the hardest part. Also, I can still play games I rent from the store, right? I hope I can get the sticker off and back on.

If getting the case open is the "hardest" part you are in for a surprise. People here like to say things are so easy for them, but it might not be so easy for you. It took me quite a while to figure it all out.
Right click my computer, properties, hardware, device manager. From there, you can find your chipset under one of the devices such as "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers" or "SCSI and RAID controllers". I had an intel ICH9 chipset that did not work, so I had to get the VIA 6421 PCI card and install that, then use jungle flasher.
Make sure to read the manual for jungle flasher...I kind of bypassed the "must install I/O port..." thing and my pc could not read my benq. If you don't know what I'm talking about, chances are you will not succeed right away. Reading will save you some time in the end.
Yes you can still play rented games. Hope this helps.

Mine shows:
ATI 4379
ATI 437A
Hope one of these works. Where did you get the card if I need one?

The case can be intimidating if you are unfamiliar with it. The first one I ever did I actually cracked a little bit. Now over 250 cases later I can do it with my eyes closed, while tied to a stake, in the middle of an inferno...Anyhow you DO NOT need special tools to open the case. Just a small flatblade screwdriver with no bigger than a 1/4" tip. First remove the faceplate by grasping it with tips of your fingers. Then the screens, top and botton. The top one has two tabs that you may have to wiggle the screwdriver in through an opening but the rest of the tabs you can get through the side holes, for the most part. Then warm your warranty sticker and delicately remove it. Pry out your dvd eject button as it may get in the way. Now on the front just unclip the four or so tabls that hold the halves together. At this point I put the console on my lap with my left hand holding the front halves apart about 3 inches. This prevents them from re attaching and also puts force on the rear clips. Screwdriver is now in my right hand and I firmly press inward on each of the 6 or so tabs in the rear.(The rear tabs I am referring to are right along the rear seam of the halves, follow the seem and you will see two of these tabs grouped on one side and 3 or 4 grouped on the other side. The tab is right at the seem and about the size of your screwdriver tip. Just press in on it until you hear the SNAP. Don't wiggle and pry as you will damage the case) Starting at one side and working to the other. Each tab will "SNAP" when you hit it just right. Now you have six screws to take out. Check out all the good guides and pictures that others have compiled for dissassembling. Goodluck

Stupid question, but I thought jungle flasher had the firmware built in, but there is a folder called "firmware" place firmware here. Do I need to get the firmware to load or is this what is extract from the DVDROM?

you need to open up the firmware files that came with JF and select the ones that correspond with your drive, and then copy and paste them into the folder that says 'place FW here'.

I put "all the firmware" files in that folder. JF uses a checksum method to select the hacked firmware you need and has "automated" the selection of the hack firmware. So you don't have to go looking for it and so you don't overwite your "blank key" hacked firmware.

So jungle flasher will get the firmware for me, correct? That's how I thought it worked. Man, these guys are good!
If my onboard doesn't work, was this the one you got?

JF will get the hacked FW for you based on the file loaded into the source if the hacked firmware is in your "put firmware here" folder.
I have never used that card, nor is that the one named in the tutorial. It does have a via chipset so chances are it will work. I wouldn't buy it though cuz it ships from HOng Kong. I have had bad luck from Honk Konk. It also has IDE... something you don't need and will probally never use.

Okay, I guess I am confused then. So JF will get it for me, then I save it there? What file am I supposed to put in there?

that card chcky18 linked to from newegg is the one i used and worked great. it also has IDE and i'm going to hook up an old IDE hard drive to it. of course, you don't really need that, but it is one of the cheapest cards around anyway. i wonder if they're making a killing in sales due to all the free advertisement afterdawn is given them!
about the firmware...yeah, i just took the 1.51 ixtreme from xbins (if you have not used xbins, try it out, it has a ton of great tools in an easy to download interface). then again, i think you said that jungle flasher actually comes with the firmware, so no worries there. i put the exact one i wanted in the folder you mentioned (the one with the text file that says "place firmware here"). from there, jungle flasher will do the rest, as long as you can follow directions carefully.

Yeah, that's where I am at, but I cannot connect to xbins. I keep getting connect failed or cannot connect. Anyone have this problem? I need the benq firmware.

just google around for the right firmware (1.51 for benq) or look on afterdawn...it's not too hard to find. the iextreme website also hosts it but i can't think of the name of the site....team xecuter or something along those lines.
as far as getting your box open, watch some videos on youtube. instead of reading about it, watch what they do. this is how i learned and successfully opened mine. i used a small set of scissors (like nose-hair ones but with a point on the end) to open the plastic tabs in the back. otherwise you can use a really small screwdriver or even probably a paperclip or something. to open the inner chassis, i think you need a torx 8 bit (screw driver with a bit that looks like a star shape). This can be found at any hardware shop with the screwdriver sets/bits.

I recently did my first firmware flash on a BenQ drive. I bought a VIA 6421 SATA card and a case opening tool from eBay. I used JungleFlasher to do the flash and all was going well until it came to reading the drive's firmware. JungleFlasher would freeze up and I'd have to end the task in Task Manager, which was quite worrying as I didn't know if it would mess up my 360. I'm positive I followed the instructions correctly - I installed PortIO32 and made sure no other drivers for the SATA card were installed, but it still wouldn't work.
After trying several times and failing, I thought I'd have a go at plugging the drive straight into one of the SATA ports on the motherboard as a last resort. It has an Intel ICH9 chipset. This time it worked straight away, JungleFlasher no longer froze and I flashed the drive in no time using THIS excellent guide.
BTW, the case was extremely simple to open with the unlocking tool and it left no marks or scratches. I know you can do it without one, but for the sake of £5 (which is what I paid, including the tool and the Torx screwdriver you need) it's worth getting one IMO.

This is why I am going to order the via card recommended above. That way I know it will work.

That is a Via 6421 card, the same as I used. It didn't work for me, but I sold it on to someone else on eBay and they said it worked fine for them. I guess it depends on your PC's configuration. For most people it does work, but for some (me included) it doesn't.
