hmmm... this happens to pc's when the power supply is taxed at or near it's potential due to heavy load, like a video card or lots of peripheals. You can disassemble the hard drive case (the plastic xbox hdd case, not the drive itself) and make sure the connections have not come loose, if they did you would drop voltage and lose performance. Its just a combined sata and sata power plug that converts to the xbox's connector. Or a cap or vr on the mobo is failing wich isn't supplying voltage when its needed.

The more likely problem is a damaged needle in the hdd, an aging motor in the hdd, or corrupted firmware which usually renders it useless. I am not entirely positive but some hdd fail when the rpm that is expected is not achieved (due to voltage drop or aging motor). So the needle leaves its parked position and attempts to retrieve data at a certain spot but the anticipated spot it never reached because of the rpm deficiency. Can you hear the needle continuously returning to parked position? Its like a soft "twang" or "tick" every couple of seconds???? If you hear that then consider the drive done. If it is doing that the needle will eventually fail and could damage the storage media. I suggest you get a replacement and transfer the data before you lose it.

Ok more details: I bought this drive off e-bay for $10 said it was broken. got it put in xbox and it never goes to E68 or any other but sometimes this takes a min so i get up and go get a drink. come back and dashboard is up and says 4 profiles found. so i go to system/memory and it takes a good min. to pop up then i hit format and it says it failed. now every file has a large yellow ! and the profiles say corrupted. i try to delete them they say they delete but they are still there. I have the cable that comes with a 120gb for transfer can i use that to fix? The tamper seal is intact but who i bought it from has removed the big gray sticker with the barcode on the bottom of the drive.

I bought a wholesale lot of hard drives, 25 of them. They were listed as "untested". Of course that was a crock of sh*t as most of them were failed. With identical symptoms as you described in your second post. I would suggest the transfer cable will work as the "media" in the drive is probally good. If you get it to spin up then the data is accessible but may fail during transferring. Your best bet would be disassemble and access directly to a sata port on your computer. Use Norton Ghost to copy an image to your pc's hard drive. Then when you get a replacement drive use Ghost again to make a replacement. To repair the one you got you will probally have to disassemble the drive itself and replace the needle thing. That is a delicate process and not really worth it as you would have to have a "good" needle to put in there. If you have a good needle then your probally have a good drive, so why waste it? If the drive doesn't have YOUR data on it and you are just curious as to what data is on it I can tell you from experience there is probally nothing worth saving if its not your game saves. Other peoples profiles and game data is worthless. Unless you are into fraud or something you could probally find their credit card info on their but I don't suggest you mess with that stuff.

you can use the transfer thing but you can also take it out of the xbox plastic shell, hook it to sata power and sata port and use windows to format it. but your problem is probally mechanical with the needle. if a format is successful then cool!!! Out of the bunch I had that worked on maybe 3 of them. I only tested them for a read/write/erase function then shipped them. I haven't heard back on any of them but 3 out of 25 doesn't give you very good odds. Goodluck
