Just before Christmas, my 360 started screwing up, I took it to a private repairman as it is a flashed console therefore warranty voided, he replaced my graphics chip and it worked when I got home.

Now, about a week ago, the 360 RROD'ed again and gave me the 0110 error which is apparently a RAM/RAM overheating error and the X-clamp fix might sort it, I bought a kit off ebay, when it arrived I took the 360 to bits and was astounded to find the fix had already been done and some pink pads were on the reverse of the board.

I decided to try the baking trick and what do you know, the console booted up, great I thought. 4 days later, RROD again, opened it up again, did the bake trick again and it worked, now today, it RROD'ed again, I did the bake trick and have kept the shell off incase it's heat but I can only play about 10 minutes of a game before it freezes and I have to reboot, but it's not RROD'ing at the mo.

Any help would be appreciated as I'd like to avoid shelling out 100 quid + when I'm currently out of work. xD

those are there from MS they started using them after they found out that the ram chips overheat. the penny trick counters this by adding much more pressure so the chips dont come loose

how many pennies did you use in each stack? recommended is 3. did you cover them all with electric tape completely?
More importantly did you overheat the box(correctly)? After doing xclamp or penniy trick it is best to move the fan so that it is blowong down onto the CPU(tall heatsink) only. so that means the fan needs to be facing the opposote way that it usually sits in order to blow air onto the cpu. you wantto cool the CPU only and let the GPU get hot. Minimum 10 minutes of this but i have had to do it for 20 mins to have success. You might hear some pops or small noises from the board which is fine. After that just turn it off and do not move it or turn it back on till it cools down. IF move to much it could cause more damage to the parts that get loosened by the heat and such.

Also did you screw the Board back into the metal casing? that is key to add the pressure to the pennies.

I originally used 3, but the board wouldn't go down, so I went to 2, I haven't screwed it down yet but I did the bake trick unplugging the fan and it's been running Tomb Raider anniversary for about 10 mins now without a problem. Will update.

Unplugging the fan completely will fry your CPU so dont do that. CPU needs to cooled at all times.
yea screwing it down is needed to apply the extra pressure to get the ram chips that had previously became loosend to set back in place and also prevent them from comming loose again. it will seem like it wont fit but it will. when it all gets back inplace the screws will pull the board down and it may seem like the USB ports and stuff wont line up but when you put the case back together it will get pulled in place.

oh and when i said let it overheat that doesnt mean you have to actually play a game or put a disc in. I just turn them on with vid cable in and let it sit at the dash or whatever type of limbo of hades a rrod 360 gets stuck in lol. Usually they already have rrod so seeing video isnt an option.

Oh, I've already overheated it, mate. Was playing Tomb Raider after overheating to test it, it just froze on me, so I'm now screwing it back together.

All screws back together, booted 1st time like it did when it was loose, seems to be ok, so far, no freezes after 20 minutes of gameplay.

because of these several "bake" tricks you will now have repeated RROD very often. Guaranteed!!!!!!!! Lead free solder, especially in a bga arrangement can only handle the transition from solid to liquid a limited number of times. That is if you actually got the solder to flow at all.

@ stealth... what do you mean pops and noise from the board?????? if you do hear this stuff the rapid heat rise of the gpu is too much!! I know you have a couple RROD's running strong but heating slower and more evenly will yield better results!!!!!!!

Well it only has happened after like 10 mins of heating. I have heard some say it is bad and too much heat and others say it is just the chips shifting slightly. When I have heard them it hasnt been loud.
You are probably right tho but the one system that i had to really work on after it got multiple rrod has been working for about 2 months now. I figured at that point it was already a brick so any progress was better than just giving up and trashing it, guess i got lucky.

it may have been thru the heat and cool down phase too much. I would try to find a cheap used one to replace it and use the drive from the dead one to rip games with, may have to wait for 0800 support with 1.6ixtreme as i cant remember which drive you said it is.

It's the dreaded Hitachi 79FL. I wonder if I buy an Arcade model, will I get the Jasper model and be able to flash it?

I think the noise is the board itself. The heat causing flexing of the board. The board is comprised of a few different materials and they expand at different rates. As the expansion takes place among the different materials a shifting effect occurrs. I just thought of great experiment!!! I will take infrared/thermal images of the boards next time I reflow one. Maybe this will help us determine a better reflow profile and also which components are more or less effected by the heat rise in terms of movement. (damn, wish I could do console repair as a full time job)

thats a good idea. even better if someone of us had the xray equipment to go with it.
and about the fulltime job stuff..you have no idea how many times i have said that. as it is i am a fulltime tech working in server integration, so it wouldnt be a huge change but i would enjoy it much more :)

well if the economy goes any further downward I just may be looking to start a small business..... I would probally concentrate on video games but do pc repair to help pay the bills. Where are you? Did you once tell me Pennsylvania? I can't remember.
In regards to the economy... during the great depression movie theatres thrived. People were losing their jobs and income but still found enough money to go the movies. The theatres were a place for friend and family to "feel good" and get their minds off the downside of things. Maybe in todays world if economy crashes things like pc's and video games will be able to ride out the storm. Just look at Xbox, Wii, and PS3 sales this past month. I am pretty sure they were all "up" in sales.
