I ordered a power supply off ebay and it came in today and I noticed that its for the newer models because it has the thing in the center to prevent it from going in my older xbox. I was thinking about just cutting it off but i looked into it and found that it outputs 175 watts while the older power supply outputs 203 watts. Do you really think it will make a huge impact on the life of my xbox?

Yes. That's exactly why they made the plug so it wouldn't plug in to older models.

this is argueable... the 175 can deliver the energy needed to power an older 203 if you remove the "tit" inside the consoles power recepticle. The newest jasper ones (forgot the wattage) cannot because it is significantly lower than 203. Then WHY did MS ever make a 203 if all it needed was 175???? Well both CPU and GPU were of the larger size back then and the math led them to 203 watts. Keep in mind this one little factor, the power supply does NOT CLAMP at its nameplate rating. Therefore a 175 can actually handle the demands of a 203 because the difference between them is negligible. There has been power studies that were published on each of the different generation consoles showing what they draw at different loads. For example (don't quote me cuz I dont have the data in front of me) if a 203 watt console was adequately cooled and running a game from the hard drive the real power value may only be 175 watts. Now even if the load increased to 200 a 175 power supply is not going to just shut off. Now if the board was shorted and for a split second 500 watts was demanded then the power supply thermal/ overcurrent trips or whatever.

Put it this way, I had a 203 console running off a 175 supply for couple of weeks without a problem, BUT I had heatsinks on the ram and some screens removed with whisper fans. So the fan load never reached its maximum. So it can be done.

Should it be done???? I will go with Bhetrick on this one, NO it probally shouldn't be done.

I appreciate all of the warnings, but since bd911 has given me some hope i think ill go ahead and do it. I don't have the heat sinks on my ram chips, but i do have a whisper fan. And bd911 if my console does break, I will blame this directly on you and you will send me the xbox you are currently using and all of the games and controllers you have as well. Heck you might as well send me 1000 dollars cash while your at it too.

IT IS RISKY (despite that I have done it successfully).

The worst case scenarios are these:

1 You burn up your power supply after some substantial heavy use
2 If the load of the xbox does exceed the 175 watts and the powersupply continues without tripping you risk the possibility of voltage drop... which inturn will rob your fan and dvd drive of speed. DC motor RPM like in these devices is directly related to voltage. This could effect gameplay(dvd) or cooling(fan).

Suggestions: Cut the metal screen out in the rear and open up some of the intake screens
Play your favorite games from the hard drive, as it uses much less watts than the dvd drive.

please also keep in mind the risk of a fire hazard when messing with swapping of power supplies and stuff that isnt designed to work together. Im sure a home owners insurance would love to see that one.

OP.. heed Stealths advice about home owners insurance as they would deny a claim if they found ANYTHING unusual. Just cuz i did this doesn't mean I am reccomending you to do it. You do what you want at your OWN RISK. I am an experienced engineer with years of field experience and may forsee a problem before it happens. If your experience is minimal you may not recognize a potential hazard.Goodluck.

but not to contradict you stealth but there is really no "additional" safety risk if the power supply is healthy to begin with. These ps do have overcurrent protection. Although I don't know what the overcurrent is set to, I can confirm they will trip the 12v circuit if this threshold is exceeded. I think they even trip the standby power once they reach the overcurrent. The ps must be powered down before the overcurrent can be reset. The difference between 175 watts and 203 is so insignificant in the realm of electricity, from an engineering standpoint.

Yea i know what you are saying, just wanted to put it out there. At the least i would just unplug the power supply when not in use. We've all heard about recalls on new product that causes fires.
