I've got a couple of re-authored japanese films sitting on my hard drive- The Cat Returns (studio Ghibli) and Battle Royale Requiem- kinda incongruous I know!
I basically just cut out the menus/ any unecessary stuff to improve the main film's quality and I didn't remove the subpicture streams but I can't seem to set the subtitles to show on the finished burned dvd.

when I burned battle royale (using oront burning kit) I ended up with japanese audio and no subtitles whilst for the cat returns I got english audio no subtitles for the movie (which I'm fine with) but then the same problem of japanese audio (the only option) abd no subtitles for the extra documentary piece that I also kept from the dvd.

I'm no technical expert but it seems to me that the subtitle information is there- I can manually set the english subtitles/ various audios to run when i watch the cat returns at least on VLC on my computer but not to carry that over to the finished dvd.

I realise this may rather be a problem with the burning software I'm using (oront) rather than dvd shrink itself but hopefully someone can point me in the right direction

thanks, Bitey

IF you are satisfied the subtitles are present on the ripped/Shrinked DVD, open the DVD folder using DVDSubEdit and check their position.

File > 'Open Full Domain' - select VTS_01_1.VOB.

Choose the subtitle stream using 'Subpic Selection' - top right.

Use the slider to step through the subs.
Adjust the vertical position.

When satisfied:
'Edit' > 'Apply last modifications to all'
'File' > 'Save all modifications'
Note that the modifications are made instantly - there is no undo feature - maybe use a copy if you are unsure.

Bit of thread necromancy here but I'm afraid I'd lost track of this page and then kinda forgot about the whole business. Anyhow I'm keen to try to sort out this old chestnut if anyones still there!

I've tried playing around with dvdsubedit but without success- when I try to open the VTS_01_1.VOB file it can't find any subpicture streams. It can find them when i open VTS_02_1.VOB which should be alright as it seems to include cover the whole movie but I can't see any way to make the subtitles show.

I selected the one 0*20en subtitle option and saved changes (i'm not bothered about moving the subtitles around particularly, I jst want to see them) but then running the movie (battle royale 2)in VLC median player still no subtitles showed up as standard- I could get them to appear by manually selecting the subtitle track but I doubt this would mean the subtitles would showed if I burned a dvd of it, although I might just give it a try with a rewritable one...

VTS_01 is one title, VTS_02 is a second title.
It would seem that the second title contained the subtitles.
You have the options of setting the subtitle position and forcing the subtitles.
Selecting a particular stream and changing the 'Start Command' to 'Forced' will ensure that the subtitles will be selected automatically when played back on a standalone player.
In DVD Subedit, the 'Start Command' is located in the lower right of the pane.
You still have to select 'Edit' and 'Apply last modifications to all' (applies the changes to the selected subtitle stream) and 'File' 'Save all modifications'.

VLC requires that the subtitles be selected manually - forced or normal.
