I got an xbox brought to me which I previously modded that got the one red light E74 error.

All I did was open his xbox and flash the drive like I've done 20 times before with other boxes (Jungle flasher latest and iXtreme 1.51).

I put it back together, whole process was flawless. Again, same way I've done a couple dozen and they all work fine.

Could this E74 error actually be my fault or was it bad luck and bad timing?

I've seen this a couple of times. I had one console that a customer brought to me and they had been playing it for about a year and a half. Worked fine before I modded the drive and a day later after the mod, it got E74. I'm guessing because of the weak solder from overheating and cooling down just cracked when I opened the case.

You have a couple options. If you preserved the warranty sticker, you could send it back to MS and let them replace it for free. If the warranty sticker is damaged, you other option would be to send it to somebody to reflow the GPU and H/ANA chip as they are more than likely the cause of the problem. I don't think doing the x-clamp fix will resolve the E74 issue.

each time I have done fix it works for an hour, could it be i am not overheating enough, I am always a bit nervous of leaving fan off till 1 red light turns to 2 red lights. I go for 10 mins then turn off and let it cool for an hour.

should I wait for it to show 2 red lights?

The problem more than likely exists between the GPU and the H/ANA chip. Heating up specifically the GPU won't resolve the issue. A rework station would be needing to concentrate the heat on other areas. I know some members here at AfterDawn have a rework station, but I'm not sure on what they charge.
