HI Does anyone know if there is any problems burning Datasafe Ritek G04 4x DVD-R at 2x on a Pioneer DVD-104. My machine is giving me error and fail messages when i try to burn these disks at any speed other than 1x eg max or 2x,

I am using Pioneer DVD-104, Firmware 1.31, copy to DVD for burning on a Win XP machine
Thanks

Dont use 4x disks in the 104, there is a bug in the firmware that can screw up the drive. Stick to 2x, Ritek Arita G03's are really cheap right now.

The Phantom Baw Flinger stikes again! Wuh Ha Ha!!

Hiya dplant123,

You could also upgrade the firmware of your drive to give it support for 4X media.

Here is a quote from Pioneer:
Quote:
Update Information
DVR-A04/104 Firmware Update Information
Version: 1.41
Posted 12/5/2002
(from Ver1.40 to Ver1.41)
DVD-R/RW Writability Additional Improvement
CD-R/RW Writability Additional Improvement

(from Ver1.33 to Ver1.41)
Supports 2X writing on New 4X DVD-R media
Supports 2X writing on NEW SONY DVD-R Media
DVD-R/RW Writability Improvement
CD-R/RW Writability Improvement

(previous version 1.33)
Revision handling for writing high speed media
DVD-R/RW Writability Improvement
DVD-R/RW Playability Improvement
CD-R/RW Writability Improvement
CD-DA Playability Improvement
Support 2X writing on CMC DVD-R Media

We advise that you should only perform this update if you are experiencing problems with DVD-R or DVD-RW writing.
These updates are specific to DVD-R/RW For General Version 2.0 media use.
If you are using older DVD-R for general Version 1.1 media it is recommended that you use up all this media before updating the firmware as after doing so this media may no longer be recognised by the writer or writing software being used. After the FW update only use DVD-R/RW For General Version 2.0 media. This will ensure that the writer provides optimum performance.
It is imperative to perform the FW update before using 4x DVD-R or 2x DVD-RW For General Version 2.0 media

Uploading the firmware via DOS:
If the firmware uploader can not recognise the DVR-A04/104 or fails when run from within Windows after several attempts, the solution in most cases is to boot the system via a Windows 98 or Me floppy into DOS and then run the update program from a DOS prompt. When the uploader runs in windows it creates a folder on C:\dvra04\Fwxxx (xxx=the firmware version number) there you will find the uploader program UPGDVD.exe and two other files. First copy all 3 files in the \Fwxxx directory to a blank floppy. Then after booting the system into DOS from a Windows 98 or Me floppy remove this and insert the floppy you copied the files to and run the UPGDVD.exe uploader program.
This procedure will only work when the DVR-A04/104 is connected to an IDE port (not when it is external in an IEEE1394 Firewire or USB 2.0 case). It is preferable not to have any other drive daisy chained with the DVR-A04/104 when performing the firmware upload.
The firmware upgrade is available from here:
http://www.pioneeraus.com.au/computer/firmware.html

I run 1.4 firmware on my A04 without any problems at all with high speed media.

Have Fun....

Hi
I had 1.41 on my drive before but was unable to burn at 2X even with that. Are you able to burn at 2X using 1.41 with the Pioneer 104?
Thanks

Weird, because I just re upgraded to 1.41 and was unable to burn at 2X or have the RW's working.

Please see below for the log file from Nero re the RW burning. Any help would be appriciated.
thanks

Hmmm...

Real suspicious..

Have you tried removing Nero,
reboot,
reinstall Nero????

Have you tried using DVDinfo Pro:

Hi
Using DVDINFO (thanks for the heads up) I have got the info on both disks. Please find the DRD-RW first and the DVD-R second.
Thanks
Dave

OK,

Now we might be getting somewhere.

The drive is recognising the disks (it is the drive BIOS/electronics that reports details & status back to requesting program).

As dvdinfo pro reports the disks correctly, it tends to point the finger at Nero (and possibly ASPI).

Maybe even Windows (we all know how stable Windows is: Blue Screen Of Death anyone??)

Hi
Yea, I know the media seem really good. I wrote to Pioneer tech support but they simply says it sounds like the writer is broken and I should buy a new one (very helpful, not!)

I have tried firmware 1.31 and 1.41 and neither of them will allow me to burn @ 2x or write to DVD-RW's. Very Annoying

If anyone else has any other ideas I would love to hear them.

firmware versions 1.31 & 1.41 are known to be problematic for some...

That's why I use 1.40 : )

HI
Thanks just tried 1.40 but still would not burn the DVD-RW even with the latest download to Nero 5. Please see below for the log file

PS Thanks you to LeeFields, drchips & herbsman for all your help, really appriciated - pity it hasn't worked just yet. I shall keep trying though.

You might wanna get rid of Prassi/Veritas & turn off WinXP rec function...

Might help ;-)

Well I've never had to do it , but on a recent thread where drchips & I tried to aide Nero user(s) it was suggested and seemed to help...
Here's a quote from http://www.techzonez.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8478
Quote:
If you are using a third party application to burn with, you should also disable the recording function of the CDRW.

Open My Computer and right click the CDRW drive icon.On the recording tab uncheck "Enable CD recording on this drive" click apply and OK.

Although it may sound odd to disable this feature,it actually prevents XP's built in burning software from conflicting with your third party application.
