Trying to help a friend out by searching for her. Looking for a cheap alternative to hook up a xbox 360 using a wireless adapter. Just looking for opinions on what works well for others. It's one thing to just buy one and see if it works and another thing to buy one that you know works for others and has proven itself.

just buy whats call a game adapter it looks like a wireless router and hooks the the ethernet port. Something like Linksys WGA54G. you can probably find one on ebay cheap

There is only one, the official one from Micro$oft. All other usb wlan sticks don't work with an Xbox 360. There are two other ways of getting an Xbox 360 wireless, one is by bridging with an access point and the other is to buy an adapter that transfers internet via power cable (it's called dLan). The second one is actually what I'm planning to do as soon as I get my hands on some cash. Those adapters are pretty expensive but still cheaper than the M$ Wlan adapter.
Xbox 360: Slim untouched with a faked 320 GB harddrive for XBL, phat with LT 3.0, played Halo early, so going on live would be an instand ban, also with a faked 320 GB harddrive
PS3: Untouched 160 GB Slim, 60 GB Fat with latest Rogero and 160 GB internal harddrive.
PSVita: hardly ever play it
GameCube: Black with a Viper chip installed. With gameboy player. Trying to get a Wavebird controller.

So basically USB is locked in to Microsoft's wireless adapter drivers and nothing else... that would figure.
Access point sounds like the way to go... just gotta find her one now as they seem to have become less and less popular.

The xbox 1 wireless adapter has worked for many, many people as well on a 360. Plus people have taken old wireless routers and flashed them with DD-WRT firmware so they recieve a wireless signal instead of sending one and using this router to connect to the 360's ethernet port.
There might not be but one USB option (I don't know so I can't confirm or deny) but there's plenty of cheap ways to get your 360 online without buying that overpriced POS.

I saw a refurbished M$ propriety wireless adapter go for $50 US (free shipping) on deal extreme. That is still pretty expensive, especially for a refurb in HK, though you could probably find it cheaper on ebay. M$' propriety hardware (hard drives, wireless adapters, etc.) and accessories are a huge rip off. It's the old classic razor and blades deal. If M$ allowed you to use third party stuff, they wouldn't be able to sell the console at a loss so I can see why they're doing what they are doing.

You can also "share" an internet connection from your PC or Laptop, not exactly what you were looking for but it worked for me. spent 5 bucks on a crossover cable and that was that
Start button -> Settings -> Network Connections
Right-click the appropriate connection (likely your Wireless one, duh)
Click the "Advanced Tab", and check that first box.
Reboot laptop & Xbox, make sure they're connected with a CROSSOVER ethernet cable (not the regular kind), and you should be good to go. This really rocks - you just transformed your laptop into a $110 peripheral for your Xbox.

additionally if your lappy is recent then a reg straigt through cable will work, as most nic's are mdix now... or will recognize and switch for you without a crossover.
@eisherz... what is dlan? similar to power over ethernet or powerline adapters??? just curious. I just never heard the term. Maybe it's something I am familiar with just with a different acronym.>>>>>?????????????

dLan means you use your power cables (those behind your walls). You have 2 (or more) adapters, both plugged into power outlets, one near your modem/router and also connected with the router, used as a sender, and one used as a receiver.
Seems to be called powerline in english, didn't know that.

And if you live in a house with bad wiring there's a major downfall.
I just want to say, i've had a lot of problems with other gaming adaptors getting an ip address for customers. The linksys wireless gaming adaptor is about the same price as the ms adaptor and is probably 10x harder to setup. I had my buddies come over to a customers house to help me. We had a ccna and a ccie pulling out their hair while trying to configure this stubborn device. Linksys techs weren't any help as the device said it was configured properly and the xbox had a static ip but still didn't work. I actually got the xbox to work by letting the computer running vista manage the device and share the connection. Though something was wrong and the xbox still couldn't fully connect.
After all was said and done i went with the customer to return the pos device and picked up the 360 wireless networking adaptor. All i had to do was plug in the adaptor and enter the wpa code i setup earlier. It took maybe 2 minutes and everything was up and running.
So i really don't want to tell you that simple is better, but really the ms networking adaptor is worth what it sells for.

Buy a Wireless Bridge. Think of it as a wireless extension cord. It connects to your wireless router, but acts as an ethernet hub. You can connect all your devices to the bridge with ethernet cables without configuring your wireless settings over and over again, and without buying any proprietary wireless adapters. The best part is that it's way cheaper than Microsofts official wireless adapter.

I just got that thing, bought it off ebay for 10 Euros (M$ Wlan addapter would have been around 50) and what can I say? I love it. It is totally easy to set up and works like a charm.

i have 2 things to ask that have to do with internet on xbox 360
1 can u use a prepaid internet usb thing for xbox live
2 can i just hook up any usb internet wireless adapter

I first tried connecting to live with a netgear usb adapter but it did not work... some non ms usb adapters do though!!! I did some research and it really comes down to what brand of modem/gateway/router you have.
I eventually gave up and spent $150 au (rip-off!) for a 360 adapter... it took me about a total of 30 hours on the phone to ms support team (very hard to understand their accent). I finally got on to a person from us and they said my motorola sbg900 wireless adapter is not compatible with live, but will work. I had to open some ports and screw around with firewall etc...
I have adsl 2+ broadband with 50 gb monthly download limit yet my connection sucks! I've tried moving it closer and still no luck... anybody got any suggestions to improve it... i'm willing to sell my ms adapter for something better!

1. No (Are you talking about UMTS surf sticks?). 2. No.
You can't install any drivers on the Xbox 360 so you need an unit that got its own drivers on its internal memory. I don't know any unit exept for the Xbox 1 wlan addapter and the one for the 360.

You can use a Wlan router as long as it can be configured as a bridge, but that's a pain on most of them. Just buy a cheap access point with bridging mode and you should be good to go.
