is there a halfway simple way to go about getting the key, the drive will not read anything, I thought I could do the pot calibration trick, then I realized that it is not spinning the disc and that is why it isnt working. I am wanting the key because I have a good benq drive that I am wanting to put in it.
Thanks in advance

Either swap the board in to a working 79 or send the board and have the tsop desoldered, read, and emailed to you. If you're interested in the latter and are in the states feel free to pm me.

I got it figured out. It amazes me that it was so simple. The drive itself wasnt bad, the magnet on the top part of the drive case wasnt there. Dont know why, the xbox had never been opened or tampered with. Shows how good Microsoft is at making consoles. Anyway, I had a junk dvd player drive laying around and took the magnet out of there. Put it on and it works awesome. Allready flashed it. Very easy.

i seriously doubt it my friend. if the drive was missing the magnet then I guarantee the xbox was opened or the magnet is stuck to the case of drive somewhere. the drives are not manufactured by MS therefore they are subject to two QC checks, one at their assembly plant and again at MS. it had to be opened before. you have been bamboozeled.... (caption and coke tends to bamboozle me)

I doubt it, the xbox belongs to my brother who is 13, parents bought it for him new, drive wasnt working so he asked me to fix it, thought I would go ahead and flash it too.
It might have opened before but I dont know how it would end up at walmart in a sealed box, with the warranty seal completely intact, unless Microsoft is selling refurbs as new, which at this point wouldnt really surprise me.

who knows maybe wally world is into some shady shit but if the magnet wasn't there it would not have ever worked reliably for any length of time. probally not even a full minute. as soon as the disc reached rpm it would have wobble and caused disc errors and ruin the disc. do an experiment with a crap disc... take the top cover off, lay a disc in the tray, and push the tray in. without the top magnet the disc will fly off the spidnle. actually I am not even sure the top piece is a magnet, some of the drives have the magnet on the spindle and the top piece is just a ferrous blank (steel) that gets suck to the magnet on the spindle when the lazer raises.

it isnt like there wasnt anything up there, there was the plastic piece but the metal behind it wasnt a magnet.i took it out and tested it by putting it on top of the magnet on the spinner but there was nothing, no force what so ever. I had never seen anything like it. Just thought it was curious.
He got it about a week ago, never worked with discs. He has been downloading games and just playing them. He asked if I could take a look at it to see what was wrong. I have fixed quite a few before that had red rings, never messed with a drive before. Beginners luck I guess.

well sir, if your parents bought this thing a week ago brand new from walmart as you have stated then I can't imagine why it would have a hitachi drive in it. Also why would your mom just return it to walmart instead of you tearing it apart? where is this walmart? oh last bit... these are permanent magnets and it is possible for them to loose their magnetism, usually happens from dropping them.

I have seen the "missing" magnet syndrome first hand. Althougt it really wasn't missing, it was stuck to the top of the drive cover, pushed towards the back. A dab of epoxy and the drive was good to go.

Number 1, the walmart near us does not take defective items like xbox 360s, the only way you can return them is if the box had never been opened. She would have had to send it to Microsoft for repair, it would have been free but my brother didnt want to wait 2-3 weeks to get his xbox back. I told him that I could save the seal and try to see if I could fix it myself. If I couldnt then he could return it no problem.
My plan was to just replace the drive, I have quite a few working ones around. I went ahead and did that because I put the new magnet back into the top of the drive and it still wouldnt play discs. the only way it worked was if the top of the drive was off and I put the magnet directly onto the game. It gives me something to mess with now and it gives him his xbox back without the wait.
I dont know why it had a hitachi drive in it and I dont really care, I am just stating what was going on. I dont need the atitude. thank you

There was no attitude, we were just wondering how a new 360 console had a Hitachi 79 in it.

It's WALMART. OLD STOCK or perhaps someone else bought it, got banned or had issues and bought a new one, switched cases and returned that one.

Old stock from a year and 6 months ago, give or take a couple of months when the Hitachis were phased out.... Doubtful.. But what do I know, I don't work at Walmart.
