Hi,
I recently purchased my first Pc after using a mac for 5 years. And so far it has been awesome. utorrent was working well downloading files at 300kbs and i was happy for about 3 days. Then today i started up utorrent and tried downloading a torrent. It was going very slow (0-20kbs). So i opened up safari (yes i still have some mac inside me) and tried googling the problem. Only it didnt work. Msn and steam messengers still worked, but that was it. So i stopped the torrent and closed utorrent, still not working. Then i restarted my pc and i had internet back! I even left utorrent running overnight but it only downloaded about 10mb. 3 days ago it would have downloaded 10gb!!!

This is really annoying me as i have used torrents fine on my mac (fast) for 5 years, why wont it work on a pc. Maybe i should have bought the macbook... sigh.

(i have vista sigh x2)

Anything new in that time; firewall, router, ISP, port change, etc.? Is utorrent showing green in a port check? This torrent will let you check thing's, lot's of seed's and few peer's, let it run 15-20 minute's: http://distribution.openoffice.org/p2p/ (version 3) Is that Vista Premium?

Hey, thanks for your reply. That torrent goes really fast so i guess the speed problem was the torrent. But the internet killing continues! Its always shown a green tick and it still does. No there have not been any changes at all. Yes its vista home premium.
Thanks for your reply mistycat.

Ok.. i think its fixed.
i was trying to dl a game (lets call it fish)
I tried about three different fish torrents with 200-800 seeders but they all screwed up my net and d/led really slowly.
Even though i didnt want to i downloaded the fish2 torrent and its downloading at 140kbs and my net is working fine.
Wierd. Very wierd.

If it happen's again, you can try lowering Global connection's and total connection's. Think it's at option's>preference'>bittorrent. You can have a look at this for the future too: http://nivmedia.com/2007/03/10/solution-...rent-and-vista/ Edit: spelling

Yeah thanks for that but i've already tried it. I still really want to download it! Utorrent shows 190 seeds but i'm only downloading from 12 of them at 2.4kbs. Do i have to do any port forwarding or tcpip stuff? I dont think i should need to because other torrents used to work fine.

Now my fish2 torrent is failing as is all my other torrent that used to download at 300kbs! Please help!
I even tried bitcomet which failed even harder.

If you're getting a green port check should be good to go, it wouldn't be green if you had a NAT issue and that Open Office torrent seemed to download fine anyway. If that light was yellow, forwarding a router or even some modem's might help. Both TCP/UDP might help if you had a router, how about Protocol Encryption: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/395674 (scroll down a bit) I'm almost leaning to Vista being the issue and specifically Premium but that's just a guess. Have you set your upload speed (option's>speed guide, I think), that can affect download speed? See if disabling UPnP at options>preferences>connection help's. Edit: you could try disabling DHT at options>preferences>bittorrent.

More than likely your ISP as Protocol Encryption make's it so the incoming packet's can't be recognized but quite a coincidence it happened as you were switching computer's. I don't know how but I still suspect Vista.

From what I read, Window's 7 is already an improvement over Vista and it's only beta (even more stable than Vista and faster than XP) but if this torrenting issue is connected to Vista, I don't think that will change in 7, we'll soon see.

It does sound as if it's your ISP, the only other suggestion I would have is to try at a low peak usage time like overnight, that won't alway's work but sometime's it does.

Don't know how this would help but worth a shot and not hard to do or undo: http://www.portforward.com/networking/static-vista.htm and see if these DNS Servers help anything: http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=150520 They're in the 2nd post in that thread and there's link to the site for info, never heard a bad word about OpenDNS, free and I have used them.

This is weird. Its started downloading well in off peak times (now) its going at 114kbs again. So i guess i'll just torrent overnight.

Opendns, good idea, i used that on my mac but not on my pc i'll give that a shot.

Static ip.... maybe i'll give that a shot. How much does that help torrent speeds?

If speed's are up in off peak time's, that's your ISP's doing and can't be changed from your end. A static ip is crucial for most router's as far as torrenting as a dynamic ip can change frequently negating any port forwarding but shouldn't be necessary with just a modem.
