i bought an xbox 360 from ebay which was advertised as being able to play backups.
is their a way i can tell what firmware it already has?

I don't think there is a way. Maybe you can email them and ask what fw is on the box?

Just curious which auction it was if you wouldn't mind posting the link. I have a friend who just sold one on ebay.

Well you could read the DVD drive via your computer with jungle flasher. That will tell you what firmware is on it.
