i have a movie in .avi or .xvid format but i dont know how to burn it on to dvd can any one help

I have edited your post , and if you don't understand why ... read Forum Rules (there is a link in my signature)

As to the answer to your question , you will need to encode the file to make it MPEG2 [which is DVD compliant]

My usual method is :
MainConcept MPEG Encoder
TMPGenc DVD Author
Nero 6 Ultra
