I have a Wiikey v1, is it safe to update the Wii itself to the latest version? Thanks.

sure, if you don't use the homebrew channel and have no immediate interest in it.

as far as i know, there hasn't been an update that blocks the modchips, only the homebrew channel option.

I have Wiikey1 as well, and I'm at System Menu 3.4. I'm holding it here until there's an exploit for 4.0. Plus, I am always suspicious of anything xx.0

If you update now to 4.0 without having the HBC+cIOSes installed, and sometimes down the road you find the USB Loader attractive, you're screwed.
