My friend downloaded the stuff (offical 500.pbp and CFW 5.00 M33-6) from http://dark-alex.org/.

He was at 3.8 M33-x or so.

He tells me followed the instructions to the letter and when it was updating, it hit 92% and said failure to update. Now his PSP is bricked.

I'm going over there this weekend to fix it with my pandora. Does anyone have any idea why this happened or a simpler way to update to the latest firmware?

Thanks!

Thanks to everyone for enlightening me!

I plan to do so without MUX 2.0.

People need to know it stores "UPDATE" folders so you can have the installers for 9 or so different firmwares at the same time, and then choose one at a time to show in the XMB.

I also read that this can happen with "fake" memory cards. What does fake mean and how can you tell if a memory card is fake?

Thanks to everyone for enlightening me!

If its bricked use this guide

http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/708959

To tell if the memory card is real by:
- Sticking the stick in the psp
- Going to Videos (don't press X, just go to it)
- Press Triangle
- Go to Infomation
- At Supported, it should say MagicGate, if it doesn't then it is fake

Thanks for the memory card check, my outdated Pandora should still cover the fixing of the brick.

So things went fine with 2 slims.

I am trying to update my phat psp, I run the 5.00 m33-6 installer and get:

Unpacking... done.
Please wait...

and from then on it seems to freeze, anyone got any ideas?

I guess I'll try updating in order >.<

Kernel wasn't set to 3.52 in the recovery menu, that fixed it.

EDIT
After all that, update went fine, psp restarted to the blue screen telling me setting information is corrupted, press o to repair and restore default settings.

THAT WAS FINE, I'M UPDATED, THANKS!

I even took the time to learn how to make .at3 files for custom eboots and it was worth it!

I also learned how easy it was to rip UMD's 2 isos using the vish menu!

Thanks to everyone for enlightening me!
