I noticed that some game images run smoother off of the memory stick with this setting, but I also read that going from "default" to "333/166" cuts the battery life from 8hrs to 3hrs. Is there any risk of harming the PSP itself by leaving it at 333/166?

No, your psp won't melt or blow up :P

I will have slightly less battery life. That's all.

Okay good :)

I just bought mine, and I could see returning it. "Um, it just exploded. Dunno why..."

Yeah the psp's CPU is designed to run at 333 but it is underclocked to save power but most people don't notice anyway.
