It has happened to most people i know. I had mine for just under a year, and i thought i was lucky... and that'd never happen to me... it did.
The main problem for the three RRoD is a gridball (can't remember specifics) overheating and manifesting. Also, a malfunction in the hard ware can also cause it.
I heard a good explaination a few weeks ago "The xbox 360 freezing is an early sign of overheating, if it happens too many times, the console will detect a problem, causing the RRoD". Sorry i can't remember the source.
