Hi i have gotten the e74 error when i turn on the xbox a couple of times(it like shows a black screen)...but the thing is this only happened when i took apart my hard drive, and i was using some game saves, then i didnt want to put the hard drive all back together so i just plugged it in and put it back in the console without the screws or top casing, then i got the 1 ring in bottom right. Then it said e74. But then i turned it off then back on, then i took out my hard drive and noticed that the little rectanglish thing that plugs into the xbox on the hard drive was not alligned right so i adjusted it, and it worked. This happened a couple times, but then yesterday i took it to my dads and brought it back home. And the case was still not on so i just put the outer case over the circuit board so it wouldnt get scratched on the trip there. Then when i got back home i got the error again, so i took off the hard drive and uplugged the actual hard drive from the case plugged it back in and reajusted and it worked. Sorry for the long story but i just want to be clear and explain it all...So is this just because of the hard drive? Because it only seems to do this whenever i eject the hard drive or move it around, plug into computer then put back in etc.

I had the e74 message a few months ago. I did some research and i found at that there's a few things that can cause it. Firstly, the console may be overheating (that what happened to me). Another is the AV cable... if it is broken it can cause this... maybe the "little rectanglish thing that plugs into the xbox on the hard drive" had some effect on the av cable port. If it happens again i'd ring up MS... but don't mention you've been screwing around with it.

I got the E74 screen not to long ago, it has something to do with the chip that controls the AV output. Two days before I got it I noticed my screen getting blurry and choppy, I then opened my 360 and pressed down on the chip (Can't remember location) and my 360 booted up. If I let off the chip I would get a blurry screen. I could easily fixed it myself, but I sent it to Microsoft.

It's the hana/ana chip

And it's from the board overheating, most of the rrod and other errors are from the xbox overheating.
