hey guys i just bought a used computer but it seems to be running very slow, its a XP sp2 intel celeron D Cpu 3.20 ghz,
367MB RAM, ATI Radeon Xpress 200 series.... this computer is running very slow, programs like firefox, office, etc take long time to open.... i scanned it with various anitspyware and antivirus software but detects no infections, last option was Hijthis log,, please help me analyze it and clean my computer,, thanks for your Help...

Hi tony909,
Your HJT Log is Clean i.e. shows no signs of any malware.
XP likes more then the minimum required RAM in order to run efficiently. I would suggest bumping it up to at least 1GB?
RAM is reasonably cheap but if you can?t do that; google a free memory manager program. That will help..
I see you are using AVG8. It?s heavy on resources and with your small amount of RAM it will bog you down. Suggest changing to AntiVir or Avast they are both very light on resources and better virus detectors than AVG.
Uninstall all unnecessary programs and clean the Temp files..
Check your HD and make you have at least 20 percent free space then Defrag..

thanks for your help 2oldgeek, i purchased new ram and i seemed to be faster.... i have another hij log from a different computer, this computer runs vista os, and its fine but the only problem is that i cannot open the regestry editor, it tells me that i do not have admin priv, yet im the only user with all this priv... so i thought it might be spyware of virus,,, i have the hij if u can analyze it would be great Thanks,,,,

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.
Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
? At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
? If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
? Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
? When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
? Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. <-- Don't forget this.
? When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be found here: C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
? Please post the MBAM Log and a fresh HJT log in your next reply.

Hello, i fixed the entries you posted earlier, but unfortunately mbam did not run at all, i even tried it in safemode and did not run...however i did run another hij log after fixing the entries, thanks

I thought you might not be able to run MBAM?
Let?s do a bypass of the Trojan so we can run it.
Uninstall your copy of MBAM using Add/Remove in the control panal.
Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.
DO NOT INSTALL YET!
Right click mbam-setup.exe and rename it to 44mbam-setup.exe
Now, Double-click 44mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
? At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
? If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
? Close the program ? DO NOT RUN!
Go to C:/Program Files/Malwarebytes? Anti-malware Right click on mbam.exe and copy then paste into the same folder. It will say Copy of mbam.exe. Now right click and rename the Copy to xxx.exe
Now we are ready to run it. Double click on xxx.exe
? Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
? When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
? Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. <-- Don't forget this.
? When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be found here: C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
? Please post the MBAM Log and a fresh HJT log in your next reply.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune & save it to your desktop. DO NOT use yet.
Please download and install SUPERAntiSpyware Free
? Double-click SUPERAntiSypware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
? An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
? If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and unzip into the program's folder.)
? Under the "Configuration and Preferences", click the Preferences... button.
? Click the "General and Startup" tab, and under Start-up Options, make sure "Start SUPERAntiSpyware when Windows starts" box is unchecked.
? Click the "Scanning Control" tab, and under Scanner Options, make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
o Close browsers before scanning.
o Scan for tracking cookies.
o Terminate memory threats before quarantining.

i downloaded super antispyware, but it did not want to install,, same problem as mbam, so i tried the trick by renaming the exe( adding 44 in front of 44superantispyware setup.exe and it worked,, went through the terms etc and it began to install,, however halfway through the installation my computer screen went blue with the white writing( A problem has been detected and windows has shutdown... etc) so i restarted the computer and tried again and the same thing happened...
i have not ran the ATF Cleaner..

I hope you made a copy of the start program and left the original in the folder. that's because when these programs try to delete something they will look back for the original program to use for deletion, else they will crater if they can't find it. that's the reason for the copy to start it..
run atf cleaner first, in the safe mode. that gets the temp files that the Trojan lays down.
I also see two AV programs running, Symantec and Eset. That can cause problems with them fighting each other for a file. uninstall one of them and then disable the other before trying to do the full procedure with MBAM again. then, if it works turn the AV back on by rebooting and let me know, with a log, please.
If that don't get the pest we'll do something that may.

well got more problems... could not run atf cleaner in safemode tried it twice rebooted computer and even downloaded to software again.. it said 'error 481 invalid picture',, i cleared out my temp files through disk cleanup, if that helps,, also i disabled the av and tried the mbam procedure again and no luck, still says that mbam has stopped working and needs to close... tried running superantispware and no luck as well...thats interesting because mbam had worked earlier but not anymore hmm..... ? oh and i did not make a ( copy of the start program and left the original in the folder) my apologies..

You MUST follow my instructions ?to the letter? and in the order presented?
If not, they won?t work? I have a reason for every step I give you and since I cannot see or touch your computer I must rely on you to perform these steps otherwise I'm just wasting my time and yours..
In order to get you back on track, do the following:
Using a clean computer download and burn a rescue disk from here:

ok i was able to run both mbam and superantispy softwares and got the following results, then i ran hij log as well... computer is running very well, much faster, the only problem is iam still not able to access regestry editior, maybe theres a way to turn it back on,, and my dvd drive is not showing up in softwares like poweriso or nero etc, but here are the results,

actually all it took was another computer restart and i was able to acces my regedit and dvd drive shows up fine in all softwares thanks alot those problems are fix :)
