PSP Freezes Randomly

So I bought a psp from ebay. Most of the stuff I can fix, but there's one problem I can't figure out.

The PSP will freeze randomly. It happens in menu and in game.
It happens even after I installed custom firmware over the OFW.
When I look at the flash3 in usb mode, it doesn't say 'this disc is unformatted', which is odd.

I'm thinking I have something corrupted? The UMD drive is completely disabled, and it happens independent of any plugins.

What could be causing this?

It seems to happen in menu when I scroll really fast. In game it just happens randomly. It happens regardless of whether I set the VSH menu to 333 or default for xmb and in game.

Help? :(

I do believe it's an overheating problem.

I put the psp on an ice pack and it seems to run just fine.

What would cause it to overheat?

Is there a heatsink that might be misseated?

Please, any information would be very helpful.
