hello guys i have been downloading .avi files alot from long time i want to know which is better .avi or .mkv as most of the movies,video songs are available on both the formatts i want to know which is better in turms of viewing on a pc and for burning a video dvd and watching it on a HD television or projectors ?
I think some people are still confusing the container->AVI/MKV, with the codec that was used to compress the video that resides inside an AVI or MKV.
MKV allows multiple audio/video/subtitle streams into one file, that's one reason why it is more versatile than AVI. It is used more for HD content(mostly containing video encoded with X.264/H.264). That is why some people have problems playing MKV files, not necessarily because their machines don't support MKV, but because they don't have enough resources to play the high resolution video.
However, you can have a high quality ,high bitrate video inside and AVI also. You can even encode with x.264 into an AVI container if you wish so. So the question "which is better image quality, AVI or MKV", is a bit unclear formulated.
Which one is better for you? If your player supports both and you're only interested in having mostly one video stream and one audio, then it doesn't really matter much.
