I dropped my psp today (sigh) and now whenever I turn it on the sony entertainment logo comes up and than it goes to the wavy line background and nothing happens. No icons or anything, just the background. I've tried turning it on with and without a umd disc also taking the battery out and they haven't helped. I notice when I turn the psp on without a disc in you can hear the reader making a clicking sound as if it's trying to find a disc. The firmware is 5.00 M33-3. I can get to the recovery mode if there is anything there that could help (didn't want to mess with it though). I could only find one other person with the same problem but they never found a solution (or at least didnt post it). Any advice is appreciated.

Try to format the flash1.

Go to recovery mode and then Advanced and press "Format flash1 and reset settings" this will reset all your settings on your psp like wireless access points that you have saved. See if that works.

progress! after reseting it and putting in the information, the first thing that came up was "disc cannot be read". Then I was able to get to the main menu. When I put a umd in the drive right away "disc cannot be read" came up again. So I tried a cso, got past the PSP logo screen and then it went black for about 5 or 10 seconds and turned off. Booted it back up and once again was back at the wavy line screen with no icons. Reformatted again and tried homers rin (gbc emulator) and it worked fine, upon exiting the emulator i got the same "disc cannot be read" message.

Well it seems that the umd frame or drive has been damaged by the drop. Does the no umd mode still work?

On the main menu of the PSP press select and the vsh menu should come up. Go to UMD ISO MODE and choose either "M33 driver" or "Sony NP9660" then go to exit and try the ISO again.

The m33 Driver got stuck at the psp logo screen but the sony one worked! thanks a ton for your help man, i had pretty much given up hope. Its pretty weird, it seems the emulators need the regular umd mode, but the cso/iso require the sony one.

I thought it was strange that the ISOs weren't working I guess the UMD drive got damaged after all.
