Hi all,
I'm trying to follow the guides to the leeter, but DVD (Fuji -R) plays fine in computer, skips in standalone Toshiba SD5700. Tried search, nothing close enough. I am:
1. Splitting AVI file wuth Virtual Dub (won't fit on one disc). Following guide precisely.
2. Converting AVI to DVD/MPEG 2 using TMPEnc. Following guide precisely.
3. Authoring DVD thru IFOEdit. Multiplexing. Again, paying close attention.
4. Burning the DVD using the burn s/w that came with my Plextor PX-708A. Unfortunately, it's Roxio DVD Burn 6.0. I take all the VIDEO_TS files, add to creator, and click burn. It then encodes and burns the DVD.
Results: Fine on computer, skips every one to two seconds on stand-alone. I've tried to be as informative as possible, in the hopes that one of you pros can catch what I'm doing wrong. The frustration level is starting to mount for this newbie. Help?
Thanks to everyone in this forum for my progress so far. I've checked out all the sites, this is the best!!
Thanks in advance, Gary.

Have you tried your burned discs in other players? It sticks in my head that Toshiba players can be very problematic with burned discs.

Hi, Nephilim
I don't have another player here to try, but I will certainly give it a shot ASAP. The player has performed flawlessly over the two years I have owned it, so I kinda have my doubts. It seems to skip virtually every frame, sometimes plays a couple of frames in a row. I can't help thinking it's something I'm not doing, or something I'm setting or not setting correctly. Thanks.
Any other thoughts, anyone??

I am thinking Fuji is not a good media at all. Just my opinion and experiences here. My Verbatim's haven't failed me yet. hope this helps

Hey, Matt..
Some interesting developments..I'm thinking my experiences here could help other newbies... Tried again, this time with Nero... NOW, the DVD plays PERFECTLY for the first 5 minutes or so, then starts to "hang".. but this now makes me think it MIGHT just be the media. I think that because I am also getting that occasional high-pitched "squeal" we've all heard, especially on damaged disks. But now i see it has TOTALLY frozen up at about the 21:00 minute mark. Is that a possible characteristic of bad media as well?
Gary.

I have read that DVD's are only compatable on about 85% of DVD players out there. I had alot of trouble with the Fuji brand media. I hear the Fuji company is being sold or changing owners and has had alot of issues with quality. All the symptoms you have is most likely bad media. I would try a middle of the road disk or even a expensive one and see if that doesn't cure your problem. Are you burning your disks as slow as possible? I burn at 4X but only because I know my setup works and I also use good quality media.. Hope this helps you out.

Matt,
THANKS so much. You nailed it! On a lark, I tried the Verbatim blank that came w/ the burner. The fuji's were burning at 2x, the verbatim at 8x, and the VERB played back perfectly!! I was really a bit skeptical that the quality between name brand disks could be that dramatic, but that IS the case. I am a ordained Nero and VERBATIM user from now on. I'm removing Roxio from my machine as well. Thanx,
Gary

Hmmmm...... I've used Fuji in the past with good results but haven't used them for quite a while. I imagine I'll stop recommending them if their quality is slipping.

garpt, good call removing Roxio - it's worthless.

Glad to help out. You should start with the expensive disks and then work your way down. There are other types of disks that will work good too. I stick with Verbatims though. I put the stuff on the disk for a reason and I dont want to reach for it down the road and have it not work. So I just pay for the good stuff.. lol .. Glad you got it working
