Cannot get hard drive to work with starview4

Hi guys and girls, I have got a starview 4 with a 250gb maxtor hard drive the box works a treat but when I want to record it says the hard drive is invalid and asks for a format but the format doesn't work either, do I have to do something?

All I've done is basicly connect them up together nothing else.
