I recently purchased a used XBOX 360 with a new replacement Hitachi v79 drive. I was able to use Jungleflasher to put the drive into ModeB and extract the existing key and then I flashed the drive with iXtreme 1.5.1 but of course the unit will not recognize any XBOX or 360 games and gives the message "to play this disc, please insert in an XBOX 360 Console". As I've searched the net and forums it looks like the seller failed to provide me with the original Hitachi drive from which I need to extract the original key. Seller is long gone so there's no way I'll ever be able to obtain the original key. Is there any way to retrieve the key from the motherboard in order to set the key correctly on this new drive? Is there any way to spoof the key or force the motherboard to accept this drive in order to play original or backup XBOX games? Without the original key is this XBOX just an expensive DVD player?
I believe there's a chip on the mobo that contains the key. But not 100% sure. If it is there you would have to desolder it and read the TSOP to get it. Complicated and a pain the butt. Hopefully either ps2menace or bhetrick will confirm or prove me wrong on what Ive said. But if you can't get the key then yes you have an expensive DVD player.

ALSO, DO NOT SEND ME MESSAGES ON LIVE REGARDING MODDING CONSOLES, OR HOW I PLAYED A CERTAIN GAME EARLY. I WILL NOT RESPOND. I WILL INSTEAD DELETE YOUR MESSAGE, AND BLOCK ALL COMMUNICATION FROM YOU. JUST SEND ME A PM ON HERE.
If I flash the drive back to the stock firmware and ask Microsoft to repair how much do they charge to fix the motherboard/drive sync problem? Do they just replace both the mobo and the drive with 2 new correctly matched units?

So were you able to dump the firmware? What does the key look like in the firmware. I know there are different key locations for the 78/79 firmware so maybe that is the issue. Can you load the firmware you dumped and see what the key looks like? If you saved the log of the dump and flash, please post it here.
Here is the .log file from JungleFlasher. I suspect that this is not truly the original key and that someone else has attempted to spoof it or that it is an original key but from another 360 unit and not this one.
I was just rereading the Release Notes for iXtreme 1.51 and I noticed this section again.
Dummy.bin Serial repair
---------------------------------------
- Where drive is missing laser and pcb barcodes
- Can be read from barcodes on h/w
- Double click the data window on serial tab in advanced view with dummy loaded.
Does this have anything to do with the key.bin that I need for this drive? It seems like there should be some way to ask the motherboard what key it is expecting to match to the DVD Drive and flash that key to the drive. Any thoughts?
