I saw a reply to this post on another site and was amazed (starting post #10). This guys player died and he took his DVD-ROM drive and installed it in his player and it works! He even has links to pictures.

I have an old ROM drive I almost never use and it never has a problem reading disks. My RCA player is touchy on dirt/scratches. One of these days I'm going to give it a try.
