Is the game a burned or retail copy? If it is retail, and your system is not flashed, then you can just sign up for Xbox Live Silver and download the maps. I am certain, though, that the maps cost money.

I will search online to see if there is a way to download content off the Internet and transfer it to the Xbox 360. Is there a reason why you cannot get Xbox Live? The silver version is free. If you have an Ethernet cable (and a laptop/desktop depending on where the Xbox 360 is), then you can connect to Xbox Live.

I can help you connect to Xbox Live if you want. It is a simple process. If you want to do that, please tell me: (1) if you have an Ethernet input by your Xbox 360, (2) if your router is by the Xbox 360, (3) if you have a desktop/laptop by the Xbox 360, and (4) if you have an Ethernet cable.
I don't think there is a way to download game content that must be purchased. And if there is a way, then you might get banned by the game developer since they probably have some system implemented that checks if the content is verifiable. But if the content is free, then it will most certainly be online. To transfer the free content, you can either use Team Xecuter's HDD Adapter or open up your Xbox 360 and use a SATA cable (which I don't recommend, as you say you are technically challenged).

If you want to get online without buying the Microsoft Wireless Adapter, and if you do not have the wall Ethernet input, then yes. The Ethernet cable cost $1 to $2. If you don't have the Xbox 360 Arcade, then you have a Ethernet cable included with the Xbox 360. Here is a picture of an Ethernet cable. Does the laptop have XP or Vista installed on it?

So you have the wall Ethernet input? The laptop-xbox 360 connect method won't work unless the laptop is wirelessly connected to the Internet.

There are a few settings you need to change, but yes, that is basically it. However, that does not need to be done if you have this in the wall.

In that case, all you need to do is put the cable in there and in the Xbox 360.

No, it won't. If you want to play games online, then you have to purchase Xbox Live Gold.

1) You can purchase Xbox Live Gold through the Xbox Live interface, online at xbox.com, or by buying a card from a store. Kmart had a special going on in March so I purchased a 12 month Xbox Live Gold card for $32.
2) Depending on whether you want 1 month/3 month/12 month membership, the prices are as follows: 1 month = $8, 3 month = $20, 12 month = $50.
3) The maps can be purchasec by loading the game and then clicking on the multiplayer option. It should say "download maps" or something like that there. It is a one-time charge for the downloaded content.

Since you purchased a brand new console, you can try out Xbox Live Gold for 1 month. I believe they offer this for three accounts, so if you want to keep having Xbox Live Gold for free, you need to make a new gamertag each month. After that, you must enter the code if you purchase a Xbox Live Gold card.
Edit: I don't know how many MB the downloadable game contend is, so if it is more than 200 MB, you are going to need to purchase a hard drive for the Xbox 360.

1) Yes and you can enter it on xbox.com (you have to login to your account) or on the Xbox 360.
2) Look at this video.
3) Yes, it only charges you for multiplayer and to download purchasable content. If the content is free, like Halo 3 maps for example, then all you have to do is download the content even if you don't have Xbox Live Gold.

No problem. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask. I am going to log off now, but other members will assist. Good luck and have fun playing online.
Here is a video showing you how to make a gamertag. Here is a video showing how to get the free month trial.
