kernal is not needed to play iso files or games. btw there is no kernal for the slims. leda 0.2 allows slims to play most homebrew games or files. personally for me its easier to compress iso files to cso (for games) and place those in the iso file on your ms. i have a slim running cfw 5.0 m33-6

You are using the PSP, not the PS1 and you play through your Memory Stick, which doesnt require CDs, unlike PS1 one.

The best firmware, I think it depends on the user. Im currently using the latest version, 5.00 m33-6.
