How to read the TSOP chip off of a Xbox 360 motherboard?

Lets just assume that I desoldered the TSOP chip off of my xbox 360 in order to get the key. How would I go about doing this? What kind of equipment, etc. I need to replace the DVD drive, but I have no other way of getting the key.

need a socket to put the chip in to read from. other than that i cant offer much help.

Your first step would be to remove the epoxy from around the tsop.





I use a rework station to remove the epoxy. That way I can focus the heat to mainly the chip. Most others use a hot air gun. They work, but you really don't have any control over the heat.

After you get your chip off you'll then have to straighten out and finish cleaning off the legs. That epoxy is not only covering the tsop, but it also gets under the chip and in between the legs. I use a soldering iron to get the epoxy out from there. For straightening the legs I use a set of tweezers. Once I got them straightened I'll clean off the remaining solder with the iron. Those legs have to be very clean and straight. Each one has to make perfect contact when you put it in your programmer.

And that's the next item you'll need... a programmer to read the chip. I use a Willem.
