... And if I want to I can go into the ip config/settings and watch it obtain and lose the ip settings for my home network... can't update, can't go online, can't use psn... does this sound familiar?..

Yes, I'm hardwired into my router. It's an older model linksys 4-port router/switch.

Sounds like a dodgy network cable or dodgy port on your router - try a different port first and if that doesn't work I suggest trying a different cable.

If the router is wireless try connecting the PS3 that way and see if you still keep losing connection.

After that do as liamrabey says, most likely a fault cable. Worst case the socket on the PS3 is messed up.
