I amnot sure if I am using the wrong tools, dont know
how to use the right ones, or if I am plain dumb. So please forgive me if this is all to easy, and still point me in the right direction:
I have 2 VCDs, excellent quality. I wanto merge them into
one big file, and then convert them to DVD and burn them.
Used the TMPGEnc to merge, which results in big quality
and size loss. Why is that? What other tool could I use/

Well the Way to Put VCD"s on to DVD without Looseing any Video Quality is to Not encode the Files to DVD because VCD is allmost the same as the SIF/CIF DVD Standard so VCD files are allready allmost Fully DVD Compliant so they can be authored Directly to DVD..The only thing that Makes VCD"s Not DVD Compliant is the Audio in VCD"s is the wrong Sample Rate for DVD so Just the audio Needs to be Re-encoded...So what you have to do first is Join your 2 VCD file into One Big VCD, To do this with no Quality loss useing TMPGEnc you have to run TMPGEnc and go to "File" to "Mpeg Tools" to "Merge & Cut" and then load in VCD #1 and then Load in VCD #2 and then choose an output file name and then click "Run" and in a few Minutes you will have a Big VCD File..After you have joined the 2 files into one Big VCD File you should watch some of the Movie to make sure it didn"t go out of Sync at the second Part because this can sometimes happen ..Now you have the seperate the Big VCD File into seperate audio and Video Files so you can resample the Audio to 48000hz, To do this Run TMPGEnc and go to "File" to "Mpeg tools" to "Simple De-Multiplex" and Load in the Big VCD File and then click "Run" and in a couple Minutes you should have a .m1p Video File and a .mpa or mp2 audio file...
Now to encode the Audio file to 48000hz you can also use TMPGEnc but you might get better audio Quality useing a different audio encoder..In TMPGEnc Close the wizard if it pops up then Load your Mpa audio file in as the "Audio Source" and leave the Video Source Blank, and on the Right under "Stream Type" select "ES(Audio Only)" ,Now click the "Settings" Button" and here under "Stream Type" you select "Mpeg 1 Layer 2" and under "Sampleing Frequency" select "48000HZ" and select "Stereo" and a bitrate of "384Kbs" and then click "OK" now just click the "Start" button in the Top Left corner and in a Few Minutes you will have a new audio file....
Now all you need to do is Get a Simple DVD Authoring Program like "Tmpgenc DVD Author 1.5" and Load in the .m1v Video file and the Resampled .mpa audio file and add your Chapters and Make a Menu and it will then Create the DVD for you, I did this with my 400 Movie SVCD Collection and they all worked perfectly and I could put 3 movies on each DVD so with VCD"s you can get maybe 4 movies on a DVD...well good Luck and if you run into any problems let me know...Cheers
