Hello everybody, just like to apologise to the guy who had a problem will cd labels on dvds. I have only been putting labels on my dvds for a month. Unfortunately, at the time of the response to the post I had no problems. Know every backup I seem to play that I put a label on jumps, freezes or just doens't work.

Drchips, I guess your right about labels. Thanks for the link to the article.

Right, sorry to go on. I have an epson photo 900. I have reluctantly bought some expensive printable dvd-r. Has any body used this printer with the cd/dvd printing facility? Do you still have playback problems after printing?

Any input appreciated.

Thanks, Mart

Hiya,

I seem to be right more often than not, just lucky I guess ;o

Not having done any extensive testing on direct printing, I can only suggest the following guidelines:

1 - Avoid touching the printed surface for a considerable time (most inks are designed for use on paper, which is absorbant, DVDs are not absorbant surfaces, so the ink will probably take a lot longer to dry)

2 - Try to design the print so that the distribution of ink over the DVD surface is even (ink does not weigh much, but at the high speeds that DVDs can spin at ANY imbalance has the potential for causing problems)

3 - Use good quality inks DESIGNED for the purpose (you are printing onto a polycarbonate surface, how will the cheap inks react with the plastic?)

4 - DO NOT play the printed disk for at LEAST 24 hours (if you have done any house painting you will know that the surface of the paint dries first, so it FEELS dry to the touch, but the paint underneath is NOT dry - spinning the disk at high speed under these circumstances may cause problems)

So far, every direct-printed disk I have has been perfect, with no playback problems.

The above guidelines are EXTREMELY CAUTIOUS, and almost certainly can be relaxed quite considerably: I just do not have enough real-world experience of the issues to make hard-and-fast statements yet.

Have Fun....

Life is just more of the same:

Cheers,

Mart.

Well its probably best to rip the film first then print, but i found out that its best not to print to dvd without printing something before you print to dvd as get marks on disk this maybe just be mine but might just need warming up lol after that you can print fine

I am using the epson r200 only costs $100.00 and does disc great. I have printed on them before and after burning no problem. Though I do perfer before. I thik the heat from burning helps set the ink.

I use an Epson R300 and I always burn first. Ink is so expensive that I'd rather have a white coaster than a printed one. But I rarely get coasters anyway. I also let them dry overnight (sometimes on top of the monitor for the heat) before playing them, but I use Optodiscs which print at 39mm, so there might be ink under the clamp ring. I've started printing every DVD I make for myself because they're so cheap now.

Speaking of printing: does anyone have a source for silver printable +R or any +R that prints down to around 23mm?
