Having to burn games at 2.4x is a common mistake most people tend to make. Actually, tests with NeroCDDVD Speed Test have shown that Verbatims capable of 8x speed have less errors burnt with 8x speed than with any slower speed.
Xbox 360: Slim untouched with a faked 320 GB harddrive for XBL, phat with LT 3.0, played Halo early, so going on live would be an instand ban, also with a faked 320 GB harddrive
PS3: Untouched 160 GB Slim, 60 GB Fat with latest Rogero and 160 GB internal harddrive.
PSVita: hardly ever play it
GameCube: Black with a Viper chip installed. With gameboy player. Trying to get a Wavebird controller.
i set img burn to max and have had hundreds of great burns,
alot of the speed tends to be the quality of burner.
one thing to remember is if it works for you to burb at 8 times than burn at 8 times, but if your xbox likes 4 times better than go with that.
I use Aone disks and have always burnt at 2.4x on other pc's before with no problems. I got this PC and coastered 2 discs getting it working properly because of an outdated firmware. Then it just did one at 4x and it burnt fine and xbox played it fine.
I will set Imgburn to auto next time and see what happens. At the end of the day it is only 55p if it doesn't work, and if it does then I will be able to do them much much quicker so it's worth a try.
Is there a chance that it would look like it burnt fine, verify fine, start playing fine on the xbox then not work at a certain part? Or if it passes the verify does that mean it has burnt completely faultless and should play as it would if it was burnt at a slower speed?
Well they are pretty good actually. Half the price of Verbs and the only coasters I have had were either through fault of my own or just the teething problems with my new burner as it had old firmware.
I don't see the point in paying double when these get the job done just fine.

There is no good reason to assume 2.4X is the best speed to burn at. I think it's a lingering myth from the days where you really did have to burn slow because drives didn't have buffer underrun protection and drive/media/dye technology wasn't as advanced as it is now.
It really depends on how your particular drive (and firmware) handles the particular media you're using. To get an idea of the quality of the burns at different speeds, try a couple of test burns and then do a disc quality scan (I scan at 5X) of each disc with Nero CD-DVD Speed, which you can download for free here: -
With both of my writers, speeds of 4X, 6X and 8X are supported for dual layer media (not 2.4X) and out of those speeds, 8X gives me the best burns - excellent burns too, although I'm using Verbatim 8X rated media. 2.4X may well be the best for you with your combination of drive/media, but unless you do a couple of test burns you won't know.
