Technically it's not a proprietry operating system problem - I have no issues developing applications to sell on Windows or OSX, and they don't need to be submitted to apple or microsoft to be installed either... this has more to do with an application-shop-monopoly issue... Apple should be forced to allow third-party application installers (or appstores) for their phone, or they should give clearer initial guidelines and in-depth reasons for denial to the developers.
I'm actually really surprised the EU hasn't begun to sink their teeth (as tiny as they are) into Apple for their anti-competitive behaviour... MS get raped over bundling IE with windows for free and not blocking applications in windows if the user decides to install it, but Apple force all developers to pay them for the priviledge of being denied their application... with no 3rd party option... also denying applications that replicate functionality that's already on the phone from them... crazy.
Also, last I heard (a while ago admittedly) Android was open source (so not so closed)... but Google are still denying application submissions to their appstore based on nothing more than networks not wanting their users to use the "unlimited data" tariffs they are paying for... they are all as bad as each other! sigh
Seriously? Man i hate all things apple. Macs Suck. I Pods are lame. They're worried about obscene words then what about 15 year olds sending each other naked pictures? Oh wait. You can't LOL! Guess i'll still with my old phone that can play music and send pictures and videos.... Damn. What a harsh and unforgiving world.
