this question is posed to those that say TY is number one.....
if this is the case...what are your number 2 and 3 choices???
also a side question......coming from a cdr background (like a million :P ) I am used to getting 100 spindles of discs and would like to move to the same with my dvd-rs once i get a sense of which discs work best for me.....
::are most of you buying spindles??? i see so many posts about deals at stores etc. for like 10-25 packs with jewel cases and whatnot.
is this a money thing? or is there a lack of quality made spindles out there??

1: Taiyo Yuden
2: Ritek G04
3: Verbatim Metal Azo
I buy in spindles anymore. When I first dipped my toes into the DVD burning scene, I bought 10 packs at the local stores till I realized that, at a buck apiece online for Ritek G04s, there was no sense buying anything else. Superior discs at an outstanding price.
Eventually someone will come to this thread and sing the praises of Princos to which you should give them a tip of the hat and buy Riteks knowing you won't have problems with them.

Joint 1: Taiyo Yuden (+R version preferred)
Joint 1: Hitachi-Maxell (-R version preferred)
3. MCC Verbatims
Runner ups in the cheaper/affordable positions would be Ritek G03/G04 or RICOHJPNR00/R01.

No offence TLO, Maxell are shite. Sorry, just had to say that. My number one is a Ritek G04, the R03 is a good dye, but overall, im just so happy with the G04.

oi!
my impression now is getting good.....seems to me that there are a small lot of the cream of the crop....however even these can be picky with your equipment....
I pretty much hear TY and ritek the most......and actually hear very little of bad TY experiences - especially -R
but like i said....then you have people that live here like fulci and he swears he won't buy ritek anymore...and plenty of people say they are crap....
i posed this same exact question on the dvdrhelp forum and a big time regular there swears he will never buy ritek g04 or anything again and that the MXL are 2nd only to TY
so i thank you all for my first mission completed....i'm just gonna have to find some small lots of discs to test out before i get the spindles - and just go with whichever seem to be working for me
please keep the feedback coming though.....as i've still not ordered anything yet and there is still time to sway my first purchase ;)
---see you all in the "NOW what the f do I do???!?!?!" forum
i have dvd x copy platinum....but now i'm investigating whether some of the stuff featured here would be better for me.....

Oriphus:
You used real "made in Japan" MXL discs before?
I have some JVC branded ones, PI/PO error rates were pretty much the lowest i've ever seem personally.
The fake MXL discs maybe rubbish but proper MXL discs are really good. A lot of people on other forums who have used real MXL discs also rate them highly.

Since I am the only one of my freinds with a burner I seem to be backing up a lot of movies. I'm new to this but have gone through about 600 discs already.
My prefferences for actual use are:
1. Verbatim for the special backups and best quality.
2. Ritek for my burners that require name brand to burn at 4X.
3. Supermedia DVD-Rs with azo for volume backup on my 8X digital research.
All of these have performed perfectly. I have used many others with varied success. No TY yet. I had never heard of it and it doesn't seem readily available for a reasonable price.
Ranking the poorer media.
51. Piodata worked ok but ended up being more expensive than name brand for so-so quality.
52. Memorex (ricohs are ok but the cmcs were terrible)
53. Platinum generic (ben-cole)would burn and read but not reliable on all stand alone players.
For reference The pioneer 503s and 333s play every DVD I made no matter how poor, +R or -R. I got to get me one of those.

If it works for you thats great. Generally, everyone is jumping on the Ritek bandwagon...Why is that? All the big manufacturers like to have their brand names with Ritek Dyes...

I also use TDK 4x DVD+R, I haven't made one coaster yet, they seem to be extremely good quality discs as well.

I must take exception to the assertion that Maxell discs are bad.
There are a large number of fake Maxells doing the rounds, varying from acceptable to utter junk. The genuine Maxells are far higher quality than Ritek to be perfectly honest.
There are now fake Maxell, Taiyo Yuden (CDRs anyway), Pioneer, TDK, Ritek, and Sony media floating about. Most of it is junk (although there are some quite reasonable fake-MID media as well if you look hard enough). If you were to get any of these fakes it would be easy to dismiss them all as crap, but that's a spurious argument.
As has been said, genuine Maxell media, made in Japan is your typical very high quality Japanese product, and it is unfair to dismiss it based on some dodgy counterfeit media.

Exactly just how do you determine that the product is genuine BEFORE you purchase it? Ive downloaded that nifty little dvdinfor program but it doesnt do much purpose after the fact.
Micro Advantage 8DVDRW-B13
Using DVDXCOPY

You really don't know for 100% when you buy the rebranded discs such as Memorex, TDK etc.
The absolute best way to know what you're getting is to buy from the actual manufacturer such as Ritek or Taiyo Yuden. The best deal going is Ritek G04 media which can be had online for around a buck apiece. Ritek is some of the best you can get, especially for the money. Try rima.com or supermediastore.com for your Riteks :)

I picked up some tdk's at kmart the other day, and they all have the tyo1 media code.
LOL, i use laser AN35 and an31's, and have never had any probs, or none yet anyway. The cheapest i've seen is $70 for 50 for ritek (G04) at $1.40AUD a pop in oz.
