It's a slightly lengthy process:

First of all, yes, you need custom firmware, depending on what firmware version you're at right now you may be able to use various different methods, but the most widely used today is the Pandora Battery, see here, get to 5.00 M33 and you'll be done with the PSP side of things.

Next, you'll need to rip your PSX games from their disks and convert them to files the PSP can understand, this used to be a lot harder than it is now, so be greatful :) You can use AutoPOPStation4 for this - see the guide here.

Optional:

If a certain game won't run it may be due to your POPs version - some games work on some firmwares but not on others, you can sometimes get round this by using Popsloader. Here's a guide to show you how to use, install, and add firmwares to Popsloader. Make sure you download the 5.00 M33 Popsloader or it won't work.

PSP, all the way from 1.00 to 5.50 GEN D2 - DS Lite w/ M3DS Real (M3 Sakura v1.34)

Face, meet palm >.<

Rule of thumb; if someone's already said it, you don't need to say it again.

Also, avoid shouting ;)

Finally, he's already said he has a 1000 series, so he doesn't need to worry about his motherboard.
