My kids trashed my original "Finding Nemo" DVD. I tried copying from the backup I created using DVD X Copy Platinum and was going to use Nero to create a new DVD, but I kept getting a copy error. For the hell of it, I tried several different backups as the source. All the backup copies failed during the copy from the DVD to the hard drive. To all you techies - could I possibly have a bad DVD drive to where it can't read the source (I'm using an HP 300i DVD Writer and have burned several movies successfully)? Or am I doing something wrong? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Hi gblazek, Are you trying to run the copy back through X copy Platinum Again?? If so it will not work. X copy software won't let you copy the copy again with X copy software. However just using the disc copy part of Nero by itself should work. No need to decrypt it again. Any disc copy program will copy a copy again because it is a plain jane dvd with no protection. If this doesn't work, look for problems elsewhere like a firmware update for you drive or check computer settings for things like DMA.

Jerry

If that fails too, use DVD Rescue that comes with Platinum, that should copy the back up although it will take longer...

Jerry J - I'm actually trying to do a straight copy from the backed up DVD to the HD. I'm not using the DVD X Copy Platinum at all.

Ok lets try this. Even though you copy is already decrypted, see if DVDshrink or DVD Decrypter can rip the copy to your HD. Also can you still play a DVD movie in your burner drive. If you can then it should read a copy dvd unless the copy is defective or damaged too. Both Shrink and Decrypter are free downloads if you don't already have them. There is no burning process going on to get it to the HD. Just read.

Jerry - I can't even look at any DVD using DVD Shrink. That's why I think my DVD player may be flaky (it's an HP DVD 300i). I can write to blanks using DVD Shrink, but cannot read from them. This all started (I think) when I moved my CD and DVD drives from the secondary motherboard controller to a Promise Ultra 100 to accommodate an Ultra 6 hard drive. I could troubleshoot this issue, but I am on disability with MS, and the hands don't work as good as they used to. If you know anything else I can try, I'm open to any suggestions.

Have you updated your drive's firmware lately?? Here is a link to start the process.

http://h20015.www2.hp.com/en/softwareDownloadIndex.jhtml?reg=&cc=us&softitem=dv-13024-1&prodId=hpdvdwrite241023&lc=en&plc=&sw_lang=en&pagetype=software

There are 2 different firmware updates for the 300 series.
The site says if you pick the wrong one it just won't install.
If this doesn't work, you may have to get the burner back on the secondary IDE ribbon set as Master. Wish I could be more help.

Thanks, Jerry. My firmware is already at the latest (v.3.00). I'm a stickler about making sure BIOS and firmware are at the latest and greatest, whether it be motherboards or peripherals. Looks like I'll start troubleshooting. I appreciate all your help.

I put my DVD burner on the secondary channel on the MB (as a primary device). I can read discs created with DVD Shrink (play them, sees all the chapters) on my PC, but any backup created with DVD X Copy Platinum cannot be read or played on my PC. The label of the X Copy DVD is only shown as the first character (i.e., The Hulk DVD backup's label is T). So I can't make a backup of a DVD created with DVD X Copy Platinum, but I can if I use DVD Shrink. Any ideas? Also, give me a gun so I can shoot myself for paying for Platinum when DVD Shrink does the same thing, especially since they removed the Ripper. So much for that
