I'd like to convert my high quality DVD captures - made using the Panasonic DMR-E50 - from .mpg to DivX or XViD .avi so I can make my recordings easy to download via the net. These would mainly be music videos and bands performances on TOTP etc

Can anyone tell me the best way to convert, as currently my 3 or 4 minute video is a 250mb .mpg file, and I'd like to convert it to a 20-40mb .avi

Here's some details I got on my file from AVIcode:

File : 253 MB (0.0 B), duration: 0:00:00, type: MPG, 1 audio stream(s), quality: 90 %

Video : 0.0 B, 9556 Kbps, 25.0 fps, 704*576 (16:9), MPG2 = MPEG 2 (SVCD/DVD), Supported

Audio : 0.0 B, 256 Kbps, 48000 Hz, 2 channels, 0x2000 = AC3 DVM [0x80], Supported

Before getting my Panasonic DMR-E50 last week, I used VirtualDub to do all my editting .. and did analague captures via my WinTV card - which gave me a large .avi file to play with. However, it appears that VirtualDub can't open .mpg files? (is this correct?)

Any advice or your experiences would be appreciated

Your Files are Mpeg2 files with Dolby Digital AC3 audio and generally Virtual-Dub does not handle Both of these Formats But This version will accept Mpeg2 files as source Files:
http://fcchandler.home.comcast.net/stable/VirtualDub-MPEG2.zip

You will also need to install this so you can decode the AC3 audio with Virtual-Dub:

When Makeing your AVI files Make sure you go to "Video" and set it to "Full Processing Mode" and do the same Under audio and make sure that you choose a compression Format for the Audio and Video so that your Files aren"t Huge..DivX or XviD for Video is good and Mp3 for the audio....Cheers
