I have a Philips DVDR880 DVD Recorder.
I have recorded some home video from VHS onto DVD+R.
The DVD plays fine in other DVD players and on the computer.
I want to convert the VOB files on the DVD to AVI so that I can edit the video and add effects etc. in Pinnacle Studio 8.
However, I cannot convert the DVD VOB files to AVI.
I have tried various programs including DVD2AVI, ImTOO DVD Ripper etc.
The programs either crash upon starting the conversion or the AVI file is garbage or is very jerky and of poor quality.
Is the problem anything to do with the fact that its a Philips DVD recording? The Philips recorder does create a menu screen to select each title recorded.
There won't be any macrovision on the DVD as it's copied from a home video VHS tape straight to the DVD Recorder.
THIS IS DRIVING ME MAD !!
The video clip is only 20 mins long and I've wasted hours and hours getting no where !!
Please help :-(

When you Rip the Recorded DVD try ripping all of the VOB or VRO files to a Single File instead of a Bunch of little ones and then try to load it into DVD2AVI..And there is No need to convert the file to AVI to edit it, Converting to AVI will just lower the Quality....If you PM Me with your e-mail address I can send you an editor that can handle VOB files with AC3 audio and will edit the files with no quality loss and can even add simple effects and transitions,..
If you really want to encode the files to AVI then try this :
http://fcchandler.home.comcast.net/stable/VirtualDub-MPEG2.zip You will also need to install this so it can read the Audio...

Johnlintz - have you had any luck with this? I have a Philips model 72 which I have been using to capture analog signals and record them in DVD format. This is a much more reliable way of conversion than using analog to digital converter attached to my pc. I would like to convert the unencrypted DVD files into either MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 files to edit using a software package like Ulead MovieStudio.
Any hints, suggestions?
Thanks.

krinkov: Unencrypted VOB files are the same as Mpeg2 files, What Makes a VOB file a VOB file is the Information in the IFO and Bup files and without those files the VOB is just a Mpeg2 file with a different Timecode and Header...The Problem with editing Vob/Mpeg 2 files isn"t the Video usually it is that the Audio is AC3 and Most if not all Normal Video editors will not handle AC3 audio...If you want to do simple Cutting and Pasteing and maybe add a couple simple Transitions then that can easilly be done with an editor Called "Mpeg2VCR" and/Or "Mpeg Video Wizard 2003" it will edit Mpeg2 Files with AC3 audio and add some simple Transitions without degradeing the Quality at all Like Most other Editors ,and the "Mpeg Video Wizard will allow you to do more Complex editing and it uses a Timeline Interface so it is easy to use.....So if you want to edit VOB files then this is the way to do it because Converting them to AVI for instance will just serve to Degrade the Quality and can cause problems with Sync and other Problems......Cheers

Thanks for the information, Minion. These DVD recorders are really cool devices and my Philips DVDR72 (it is same as the Philips DVDR75 except that it has only four recording modes instead of six) will be replacing a number of analog to digital devices including those made by Dazzle/Pinnacle, Belkin, Intel, ADP, Creative, and Leadtek. These devices either hickup during the input process or create MPEG files that can't be edited by my favorite software packages.

I have been trying to figure out how to convert my VOB's to AVI for editing and found this forum. Mpeg Video Wizard 2003 is great, but does anyone know if you can do more complicated things to the audio? I have a home movie on DVD that has a lawn mower going in the background, and I would like to reduce the noise from it. Do I have to convert to AVI for that complex editing or is there an editing program that will allow VOB imports?
thanks a lot for anyone who can help me out!

What you would have to do is Demux the VOB file into seperate audio and Video files and then decode the AC3 audio to Wav format and then use a good audio editor like Sound Forge or Goldwave to to clean up the audio and then encode the audio back to a DVD compliant format and mux it back with the Video file..
So you are Basicly just seperateing the audio from the Video and then Clean up the Audio and then Put it back with the Video....

Thanks a lot for the reply. Sorry, but how would I go about Demuxing the VOB? I have DVD2AVI which, I think, allows you to save the audio seperate from the video. Is that a solution, or is there an easier/better way?
I really appreciate any feed back you can give me:)

If you have the Mpeg Video wizard then you can use it to demultiplex your VOB file..If you go into the "Tools" menu you will see something called a "Demultiplexor" and it will do the Job you want...You can also do this while ripping the VOB files to your Hard drive...
OR When useing the "Stream Processing" setting in Smartripper" to can set it so it rips the VOB files as a single Big Mpeg2 Video (mpv or m2v File) and a seperate AC3 audio file....Cheers

Help Im going MAD !!!!!!!
I've tried renaming the VOB files from *.VOB to *.mpg.
After the rename they do play in Media Player ok (with the mpg extension).
But when I try and insert an mpg video clip using Ulead Media Studio Pro 6.5, I get an error saying "file format mismatch - unable to open file".
So theres obviously some difference between a VOB file renamed to an mpg file because Media Studio won't read it ??
Minion, Ive tried using SmartRipper using the "Stream Processing" but it just outputs the same VOB files I tried to rip. Not a single big mpv or m2v file like you said ?
Ive tried all 3 settings under the ID section,
- Direct Stream Copy
- Demux to extra file
- Extract to new VOB
These settings mean nothing to me anyway.
Then theres the "Map to" pull down menu with loads of hexidecimal numbers in it - Ive left this unticked.
Surely to god, there must be a way of editing DVD video footage with video editing software ??
Especially home recorded DVD video as theres no encryption or macrovision etc.
The video is there, on DVD, in digital !!!
HOW CAN I USE IT !!! ???

I had a similar problem. I changed the VOB to MPeg by just changing the ext. This made me able to open the MPEG in ULead DVD Workshop, but it said it was a 14 second video when it was 2 hours. BUT, when going down the timeline it was all there. So, I converted from that MPEG to another MPEG in MPEG2VCR (http://www.womble.com/purchase.htm)
I used the trial version, and this worked for me. I am not remembering the exact settings I used, but try it out and see if you can get it to work. Good luck!

Well it is Simple ...Thos editors will not accept the Vob/Mpeg files from your DVD Recorder because the VOB files have AC3 audio and there aren"t any NLE Type editors that will accept Dolby AC3 as an audio format...
If you really want to edit these VOB files you have to use a Proper Mpeg editor that supports AC3 audio OR you have to decode the AC3 audio to a Format that the editors can handle like LPCM(Wav)...
You can use Mpeg editors Like "Womble Mpeg2VCR" or "Womble Mpeg Video Wizard 2003" to edit VOB files with dolby AC3 audio.....
If you want to use "Ulead Media studio pro" to edit the VOB files then you would Have to Rip the VOB files as a Single M2V Video file and a Single Dolby AC3 audio file...The you have to use something like "Headac3he" to decode the Dolby AC3 file to Wav format, Then you open up your Video Editor and Drag the M2V file to the Timeline"s Video Track and drag the Wav file to the Timelines Audio Track and then edit away ,But useing these Types of editors will allways degrage the quality of the Files were if you use Womble Mpeg2VCR to edit there would be no quality loss.....Cheers

I just purchased the Philips dvdr77, WOW what great quailty video compared to capturing from the Pinnacle capture card. For our business I need to transfer the files to the computer and export several frames from the video. Right now I have Adobe Premiere 6.5 and of course I realized quickly that they must be converted to some format that Premiere can read.
I am only capturing video not audio. I downloaded the Womble trial, but can't get past the window asking for a PSN? Can anybody help?

It worked great, I can edit my files and take snapshots of frames. One problem still remains is that all my DVD recorded files read as created 12/31/1999 5:00pm when I explore the DVD on my PC? Can anyone help? Phillips suggested a firmware update but that did not work.
