I am very new to this and I am old. All I want to do is backup my games for wii because my grand kids are hell on them and I would like to watch my dvd movies from the Wii if that is possible.

My serial number on the Wii starts with LU63 so If Im reading right, I am ok there. I have went into the Wii menu to try to find out what software upgrade that I have and I am unable to find it. Can someone point me to where I can find out what software upgrade I have?

My Wii needs to be on my home network...right? That I can do.

Im worried about the brick thing because I will get killed if I brick this thing. If I follow all the instructions in the guide, will I have anything to worry about?

Thanks for any help that anyone can offer me.

The guides are solid. Follow them and you're good to go.

READ SECOND (rules 1st) Ultimate sticky

You check your software version by looking in the upper right corner of your screen while in the settings menu.

Thank you and I will do that but I may have to come back and ask some questions. I read the guide on Bricks and can I assume that because I have only USA games that the brick thing will not be a problem for me? Thanks.

If all you want to do is backup your games you don't have to worry about bricking since the disc will never touch your Wii. If you want to play backup games that's a different story.

The link above is a great starting point. Read that, do some google searches, and ask questions. In short, if you stick to your region you're fairly safe from bricking.

It doesn't necessarily have to be on a network either, and in fact I prefer to not have it networked to avoid the chance of a firmware update being done, especially if someone other than you is playing and may choose to allow the update which could mess things up.

Thanks. I would prefer not to do the backup on my network. If I go that route then all I need to do is get one of the drives that read the disc and do the backup on my computer, burn the disc and then have a homebrew channel in order to play it? Thanks.

do the homebrew first before worrying about how to back up, if everything works then you don't even need a disk drive..

The Wii can also do back up if you used the USB loader application( from Wii to a HDD connected at the back of your Wii.)
