.mkv compatability -- Can't find a player that likes higher bit rates

I have a few .mkv 1080p movies (backups of course).

I was using VLC to play them and it has worked great. However, just recently I have played around with higher bitrates for audio and video and found that this just kills VLC.

I then bought CoreAVC codec for the CUDA aupport. And, found that Media Player Classic was recommened. So, I installed that along with my CoreAVC and CUDA support works great. However, some of my .mkv files will not play in this either. MPC just dies when I try to play the .mkv in it.

Oh, and this is on my HTPC: E6600/680i/4gigs pc1066/640gb 32mb sata3g/8800GT connected via dvi-->hdmi to samsung 40" lcd.

I would just like to know if there is a end all player that will play .mkv files regardless of size/video bitrate/audio bitrate/ect. Or is it that the .mkv files have to be a certain cryteria for fluid playback?


And on a different note: My game machine: Q6600/4gigs 1066/P35/8800GT plays the files win VLC without a hickup. And these are the same files that are not playing on the HTPC (same version of VLC on both). Some of these .mkv files are on my server, and some are local. But, I have a gigabit network so it's not network saturation. Does two additional cores (E6600vsQ6600) make that huge of a difference? I'm starting to think that CUDA support wasn't worth the money, and I should have just got another Q6600 instead of a E6600.

But, I'm open to comments or recommendations to a resolution.
