running 5.00M33-6 its sweet options for speeding up memory stick reading, loads of options in the recovery console config, its played everything ive chucked at it, downloaded popsloader for PSX games and they all play ok, remember when you upgrade some psx game saves will appear corrupt, I don't know how others sorted this out i started on 5.00M33-6.

i suppose it depends on the homebrew your running, custom themes etc as ive seen posts about theme's not working on newer firmware that did on the older

Everything from an old firmware will work with a new one aside from themes, this is because themes directly change certain flash0 files that are altered every firnware, therefore being incompatible on any firmware other than the one they were created for. Old themes have to be converted for each new firmware.

The good thing is, 5.00 M33 probably has one of the widest selection of themes there is. Check out http://www.consolespot.net for the latest themes :)
