I am planning to flash my already flashed (back in 2007) Hitachi 58/59 drive with 1.51 to play wave 3 games.
This will be my first time and I am deciding whether to use Jungle or Textbook method.
I am opting to go for the Textbook method, as I have read the Jungle is not reliable for Hitachis.
So here is what I plan to do ..
Can someone please run through this to see if I am doing the right thing?
1. Follow a youtube tutorial to opening the xbox without that special tool ( hope it works!)
2. Connect the SATA drive from xbox to an additional SATA port I have in my PC's mobo. Use xbox to power drive.
3. Turn my drive to Mode B using the on-off method which only works for previously flashed drives.
4. Restore the drive to original firmware - is this firmware already in the ixtreme set of files or do I have to provide this?
Then follow instructions.... however, the Textbook method only lists upgrading to ixtreme 1.4.
So, what is the correct firmware package to use if I want to upgrade to 1.51?
Thanks in advance.

Jungle Flasher was designed with specific hardware in mind. People try to use chipsets that haven't been tested or just plain weren't meant for JF and then they brick their drive. Then blame JF for their problem they created. If you find out your motherboard S-ATA isn't compatible, I would recommend the VIA 6421 S-ATA card that is compatible with all drives.

Yes just follow a tutorial to open the XBOX 360. Plenty of them out there.
Quote: 2. Connect the SATA drive from xbox to an additional SATA port I have in my PC's mobo. Use xbox to power drive.
You could do that. Only issue you might run into is that the S-ATA chipset on your motherboard is not compatible. In which you would have to get a VIA 6421 S-ATA card.

Use Jungle Flasher to send Mode-B. Very easy to do.

Jungle Flasher will do all this for you. Once you have got your system properly setup, JF will dump the firmware, apply key, and flash back original firmware, all in 1 click of a button. But you are correct about Hitachi's needing to be restored to original before flashing iXtreme. JF won't let you flash iXtreme over iXtreme.

Textbook is outdated. The most up-to-date tutorial is Jungle Flasher.

You can get ix1.51 from X-Bins.

Ok, so I connected my xbox to the sata port on my PC's mobo. Turned it to mode B manually, by ejecting the tray, swithc it off, and power it up again. However, inder "vendor" it says drive not detected. However, on the drive drop down list you can clearly see the drive listed.
I tried to dump the firmware and this is what I got:

Can anyone help please?

Have you installed PortIO? It is included with Jungle Flasher.
If you haven't installed that, JF won't see your drive. When sending Mode-B, just eject the drive, then send Mode-B. No need to power cycle.

Still the same, Im afraid, after manually installling portIO23 without any problems. I am on XP, btw. Could it be that I need a Via sata card?

Try restarting the computer. What type of chipset does your motherboard have?
Edit - Now that have you have the PortIO installed, after rebooting, click the bubble next to PortIO if it isn't greyed out.

Not for sure what chipset that board has. A good program to tell is CPU-ID made by CPUZ. Under the southbridge is what S-ATA chipset you have.
You might have some option to play around in the BIOS. Like setting your S-ATA mode to Legacy or something like that. Probably is set on enhanced. Might not be able to boot XP, not for sure though.
If all else fails, you will need to get a S-ATA card with the VIA 6421 Chipset.
Good luck!

that is what i used to flash my hitachi using a vista laptop. mode b flip through jungle flasher was giving me problems because it would never show the drive. I used slax for mode b flip (better ways than that, just got frustrated) then jf to do the flash.

Look at your own picture you posted. It shows all the problems.
It's obvious you don't have the right port selected because JF doesn't see your drive. You put the drive in to mode b before starting JF. In mode b Windows will detect the drive. So of course it'll show up in the Drive list in JF. But that's it. You see it in the list, along with all your other drives, but you still didn't get JF to detect what port it's on. In your first post you said you have a 58/59. The JF options are all still on the default settings, one of which is Drive Revision 46/47. Look at your running log. You tried to make a dump of a drive which you don't have. Once you select the right port JF will automatically adjust it's settings.
Did you even look at the JF guide? You couldn't have because the first step is selecting the right port so JF will see your drive.
Also, you may as well install the latest JF. You're using an older verison.

Also, in case you didn't do this either, make sure to install the firmware package in to the JF firmware folder.

Well, here is the latest.
I borrowed a sata-2-usb cable.
Connected to pc's usb port.
Got JF 1.59
Installed jungle usb drivers
Rechecked and made sure .. my Hitachi version is actually 0046DH
Now, when I launch JF, there are actually a variety of ports for me to select from the drop down. However, I still cannot find my Hitachi from there. This is, regardless of whether I put it into mode B first, or not.
I tried to dump my drive .. using classic mode, it was successful. Even managed to save my drive key. Using mode Select (which i believe I needed because I already have hacked firmware), it froze befroe I can even save it.
At this stage, I thought I should not risk a restore to original firmware as it has not worked 100% according to the guide.
Anymore hints?
Thanks so far.

Thought I would have another go, now that somehow I was able to select ports from the drop down, despite the Hitachi not showing up. It does show up all my other drives attached to the PC though. So I thought maybe it will show up if I connected it directly to the mobo's sata port again. No such luck!
So, I manually got it into mode B and try to dump the drive again. And again, like before, it worked in classic mode and even got me a drive key.But when I tried in mode select, it failed. You can see both these attempts in the log in the pic below. Maybe its time to give up :-(

again, it is because you don't have the correct I/O port selected. If you did, it would show the drive properties. Try starting from the bottom, and working your way up. Go port by port until you get your drive to show up

I have tried every port on the drop down list but it is still not listed.
Anyway, the latest is.. I connected it via usb to a laptop.
Still not detected on any port.
So, I did open drive, power off, power on, to get it to mode B and the "Mode Select" dump actually worked!
So I followed the JF manual and went ahead with the flashing.
All went smoothly.
Just before I disconnected it from pc, I thought i did another dump under mode select to see what firmware it was reporting. I was surprised it said STOCK. I thought maybe it only reported that because of some kind of stealth mode.
So, I connected it to TV, loaded a DVDR and now it wont load! It is REALLY in stock firmware. How did this happen? I had all the bin files in the "firmware" folder in the JF folder.
Now, I cannot get it back to mode B to flash it again because only my laptop could do this flash. How do you get a stock drive to go to mode B if you flash using a usb to sata cable on a laptop? I'm beginning to think I should just pay someone to do this ... much cheaper than all the time I spent attemting and failing at this task.
