I have two AVI files. They are parts one and two of a movie. How do I join them together to make one new, larger AVI file and what is the best software to do that with?

use the free avidemux, open the first file then append the second file. Keep the video/audio on the default "copy" and it will join the 2 files without reencoding takes less than 5 minutes.

When the files are open, use the slider to move where the 2 files will be joined, sometimes you might have to do minor editing so the join will be good.

I opened the first video then hit append for the second one. After I did that I kinda didn't know what to do. I was just staring at a black screen. Then, just guessing, I hit play and moved the slider all the way through and saw that the whole movie was there, which I imagine is what you wanted me to see. At this point does that mean that they have automatically been joined by AVIdemux?

If so, all I need to do is save a copy, correct? But you said something about finding where the two files were merged then possibly doing some editing. I kinda did that when I first discovered that the two files were there and merged together, but I could not find where they were merged. Wouldn't one assume that if AVIdemux did such a good job at merging them that you would not be able to find where they were joined nor need to edit?

All you need to do now is press the save button on top (icon of floppy) a save box will open. Make sure when you name the file you add .avi at the end. example movie.avi (avidemux doesn't add the extension automatically).

Once file is saved, don't close avidemux. Find the folder where it was saved and play the file. Pay good attention where the 2 files where joined to make sure that it was a good join. (From my expierence sometimes the video1 and video2 weren't split properly and when rejoined there might be some artifacts etc) . Avidemux can usually edit these minor problems quite easily.
