Hard drive alternative for PS2 ?

Is there any thing out there that I can put about 40 games on and not use the hard drive to store my games so I can use it for like an arcade game machine with timer and coin slot etc. I want to get away from getting a network adaptor for the hard dive because of the cost involved and maybe enable me to use some thing else to hook up the hard drive to the ps2, or a usb maybe if had enough space?? Is that possible also?? Or is there some other machine that is more suited for my application? As you can see I not know to much about this so ne help will be appreciated.
