i just tried to hook up my 360 to live with my 100ft ethernet cord to my linksys but when i do the automatic test it says it is disconnected. do i need to try and open up ports or somethin
you are recommended to open up some ports (found on the xbox.com support pages) but that shouldn't mean that it doesn't connect at all.
check in your router config that it shows up and make sure any firewalls you have are allowing the xbox connection through
How do you have it wired?
It should be Modem---->Upload or WAN port on Router---> A numbered port from router to the Xbox.
Once you have that setup you need to reset both the modem and the router. Just unplug the power from both for about 3 or 4 minutes then plug them back in.
When you plug them back in let everything go though it's startup cycle and let the modem get a solid sync and ready light.
Now turn on your xbox and see if it will get an ip address.
Go to the My Xbox tab and then all the way to the right to system settings. Then go to network settings and click configure network. You'll see this screen
If you need to open up the ports you need to first go to the run prompt on your computer or press the windows key and R at the same time. Type in cmd and hit enter, it will bring up a command prompt. Type in ipconfig and it will list a few different things. Copy down the default gateway number (ie 192.168.0.1, 192.168.1.1, 192.168.1.254). Now you want to type that number into your internet browser and it will bring up a login screen. More than likely the user and password is the same. For most linksys routers the user and the password is admin. So type admin in both fields, it should load a screen like the one pictured below.
Go to the applications and gaming tab and you'll see the following screen. Fill in the name of the service as xbox live and select the same port numbers as listed. Also fill in your xbox's ip address from above, they have to match for this to work.
Once you save the settings you will have to restart your xbox. Make sure that it starts with the same ip address as before and everything should be set.
Let me know if you get confused or need help, i'll be around.
Ya, I think he just needs to reset the modem and router, then turn on the system and try again. I have a linksys router, and I never had to open ports in the router. It should just automatically go through.
