all drives are default 12x from the factory anyway, thats why 1.6 enforces 12x. so shouldn't be any noise difference, but it is common. not sure if there is a solution or not, but i have seen the problem posted here before, so i am sure if you search you will find the answer you are looking for.
noise difference could be because the drive is a constant 12x now, instead of the 12x when needed, but throttled back when it doesnt need to be at 12x. however, my samsung 25 i used to have was rather loud as well. but was still the best drive i've ever had.

agreeded, every sammy i have ever owned has been a beast, and I am sorry i got rid of my last one. :(
