WMV's stutter, or don't even play at all with Media Player Classic

Hi. As the title says, I'm having trouble playing .WMV's with Media Player Classic, when they work just fine with other players. Either the videos stutter, or they don't even play at all.
However, interesting fact is that, MPC played those videos just fine untill recently. I don't know what could be the cause.
I tried reinstalling MPC, installing ffdshow, installing K-lite codecs pack, nothing worked.
I don't know what else to do. I'd be grateful for your help.

Have you updated your video drivers recently installed any Windows Updates, Which version of Windows are you using. How many other media players do you have installed? I typically do not install any codec packages as they can be buggy with Vista and use VLC player or MPC for thos files WMP 11 cannot handle as it is my favorite player over all but limited in what codecs it plays.

I'm running Windows XP SP2. I haven't updated my video drivers recently. As for Windows Updates, I only had two security patches applied a while ago, cause my PC was infected (it's clean now). The only players I have are Windows Media Player 11, and VLC. I also have a couple of video converters, one of which, called Total Video Converter, comes with a player of its own, if that counts.

you should really upgrade to service pack 3 and update your video drivers also if you had an infection it is possible that removing it damaged your drivers often removal depending on the infection can corrupt various dll's which run your video drivers, dynamic link libraries=dll

Thanks for your reply. I'll look into updating to SP3. However, I'm not looking forward to updating my video drivers. My card is very picky with video drivers, and I've had problems with those in the past. I don't want to risk that when everything else works fine, just because one video player is having trouble decoding.
Do you have any other suggestions? Thanks.

It's a Radeon 9250SE, Asus made, and it comes with its own Asus version of the Radeon driver.

Usually, the media player uses the video overlay which uses
very little CPU.
Secondly, Windows usually comes with codecs to play the audio and video
in WMV files. No codec pack is necessary.
What is the resolution of the troublesome video's?
What is the cpu usage when they're playing? (look in the task manager).

Some are 320x240, others are 800x600. Cpu usage shows as being null.

Do those files play OK in WMP 11?
If so, I'd assume there was something wrong with MPC or its settings.

Most of the videos play ok in WMP 11 and other players. There are a couple who lag a bit, but those videos have above average number of frames per second(part of an experiment of mine), so I suppose it's understandable.
I also have reinstalled MPC a couple of times. Wouldn't that reset its settings?

Mine's installed at c:\Program Files\Media Player Classic
In that folder I see mplayerc.ini.
Try renaming it to mplayerc.old and restarting mpc.
If it only misbehaves with files you created with abnormal framerates,
then it's almost certainly something about the files themselves.

I tried what you said, and MPC still plays the same.
Also, the majority of videos that don't play well with MPC, are not amongst those with high framerates, that I mentioned.

We're going round in circles.
Do the files that give problems play OK in WMP 11?
( the files with odd frame rates excluded)
If not, you may have a system problem of some kind, or possibly there's
a setting somewhere in the MPC options that needs tweaking.
Do they pay in VLC ?
Do they play on another PC?

Since recently, MPC started playing .WMV videos with stutter, or doesn't even play them at all. It plays other formats just fine.
And yes, WMP11, VLC, and other players, have no problem playing those WMV's(or other formats, for that matter). Hope thats cleared now.

You should take it up with the author of MPC.
I always recommend WMP for WMV, since it's MS' baby.

I was having the same problem but I was able to fix it yesterday after not finding any help online. What I did was to go into my ffdshowvideo decoder configuration options (in my Start Menu - All Programs - K Lite Codec Pack - Configuration). Once in there I clicked on the first option at the top, Codecs. I then scrolled down the right side to "WMV3/9" and noticed the Decoder was set to "disabled." I changed it to "libavcodec" (the other option, WMV9, works as well). After that, everything was fine. Let me know if this works for you.

The problem I was having was in MPC, I didn't even try WMP. Make sure you're in the ffdshowvideo decoder configuration options and not the audio or video encoder configuration window. Also, completely uninstalling klite codec pack, restarting, and then freshly installing klike codec pack (mega) should fix things, and go into the klite codec pack options (or tools) and fix broken codecs. I can't imagine it wouldn't work after that.

Did all that, didn't work.
It seems that the stutter I encounter in MPC, is proportionate to the video's bitrate. I.e., videos rendered at low quality(hence low bitrate), play ok, while videos rendered at high quality(high bitrate), stutter like hell. Though, same videos play ok in WMP, regardeless of bitrate.
Thought I should mention that.
