Hello, I have a Phillips drive that is dead and I want to replace it with a new one and flash it with 1.6. My question is should I go to ebay and get a new Phillips drive or should I get another type of drive? I am thinking if I get the same drive that it would be easier because I won't have to spoof it.(I think this is the case if I'm wrong please tell me)Also is there a tutorial out that would help me do this type of thing? Thanks for your time.

I think it is dead. I can put a disc in and then it says reading then it just goes to open tray. It won't boot the disc. As far as the drive goes I don't know exactly I am opening it tonight to check for sure. I was just wondering what my options are. Thanks for your help.

Also is there a way to tell if my sata port on my laptop will work? I have a Dell Studio 1735. Thanks again for everyone's help.

Sounds like a dirty or dead laser. First, when you open it clean the laser. If it's dead then you got a couple options.

1. Just buy a new laser

2. Buy the same model drive and just swap out the board.

Either option would require some VERY basic soldering. It would be easy for a first timer.

Or you could go the longer route and replace/flash a new drive.

If I buy a new laser would any laser on ebay be ok or do I need a specific laser for the brand of drive I have? I already tried to clean it once so maybe I did something to the laser eye when I was cleaning it? Thanks everyone for the help.

It turns out I have a ben q drive. If I buy a new ben q drive and pop it in as is will it work? I know I would need to flash it in order play back ups but would it play retail games if I just pop it in?

nope, it would only play movies if you did this. easiest thing to do would just take out the PCB board from your current drive and put it in the new drive. this way you dont have to flash anything at all. but if the drive was totally dead then obviously this would not solve anything and you would have to flash your current FW onto the new drive.

and as for the cheapest place for replacement drives, ebay will be the cheapest place. just make sure you find someone that has sold a few before so you have less of a chance of getting scammed.
