hello,
first sorry for my english, I'm french.
I've made a dvd with several music video in vob format.but the quality is not as good as the original vob.
When i import a clip in tmpgenc dvd authoring works 4 the weight is not the same as the vob on the hard drive(it lost about 30 mo on the importation).Smart rendering is enabled. Ive follow the process and there is no re-encoding. So I'm wandering why the weight of the clip on the project pannel is different.I've done the same dvd with dvd lab, dvd architect and even dvd movie factory 6 and the resulting dvd video picture is as good as my original vob.It would be a pretty good authoring soft if there wasn't a little lost in picture quality.
Can anyone help me?

If Tmpgenc works 4 didn't re-encode, the quality should be the same.
Are you sure it didn't re-encode?
What do you mean by "weight" ?

Yes, what is "weight"? Dont worry about your "english", we'll try to understand you as much as possible...
In the source panel, look at the clip listing. Do you see blue or red icon? We want blue. Blue means Smart Rendering, Red means Full rendering.
Also, when finally outputing to disk, at the "Post-output process" (actually anywhere not clickable), right-click and select "Preview frequency", "Preview all possible frames".
This will force TAW4 to show you all the frames it has to re-encode. Other than menus, it should not re-encode more than the last GOP of each track or the final track - no more than 60 frames total.
Would you mind sharing with us the output of "Clip properties"? We dont need to know "Clip name" and file names. Are they shown correctly? Of real importance is the "Video format" and the "File reader" used.

hello,
thanks for your answers.By "weight" of the video's i mean the size of the vob file. All the clips are in blue(I've disable "link all the clips" in the track setting).
So the project is in:Ntsc
In the clip properties the format is:mpeg2 video, 720*480, 29.97 fs, timing of the clip, 8000kb/s MPEG file reader.
All the other clips have the same settings in the "clip properties" exept the bitrate wich vary between 5400 to 8000kb/s.
In the track setting, smart rendering is enabled.
In fact my problem is that when i'm watching the dvd created by tmpg there is a miss of sharpness or definition, like if there was a little blur on the picture. the same dvd created by dvd architect has a better definition.

Why not just use one of these for your project? Why do you need Tmpgenc?

@lokalamar: The information you provided was helpful.
"Smart Rendering turned on" does not mean that TAW4 will not re-encode. It just means that "it will not re-encode whenever possible". It does not inspect the whole clip, just some headers. So, it may think "Smart Rendering" is possible, and gave you the blue "SR" icon. But during creation, it may encounter some GOPs that do not look compatible with the title set you're doing (eg, NTSC/PAL, frame size, aspect ratio, etc) and does re-encoding on the fly. Why it does this, I/we dont know (yet). Personally, I've never gotten this and would like to find out why (curious).
There are some ways to check.
You 'forced' TAW4 to read your VOB directly - it used the "MPEG file reader". Why? The 'proper' way (as far as TAW4 wants it), is to use it's "Source Wizard" and import the whole VIDEO_TS folder (it's looking for the VIDEO_TS.IFO file). There, you can optionally select which title sets you want (default all), the audio track(s) you want, and if you'll also want to import chapter points as well. Once done, you'll see that it uses the "DVD reader" instead of the "MPEG file reader". However, I've tried both methods on my sample DVD 15 mins ago, and both ways worked - zero frames re-encoded.
You have multiple clips which were encoded differently - different bitrates. Are the bitrates only different or are there some subtle differences in the encoding parameters used during encoding? Be aware the "Smart Rendering" can turn into an "Idiotic Rendering" very quickly. In TAW4, each "track" becomes a DVD "title set". If you group all those clips into one track, the "Smart" renderer will use parameters from the 1st clip to determine if the rest can be similarly smartly rendered. The DVD specs says that each title set must have only 1 set of 'properties'.
If I were you, I'd place different clips on different tracks. You can have a total of 99 'tracks' per DVD, so you wont run out of room. This way, I'll free up TAW4's Smart Rendering constrains from having to 'obey' the 1st clip's properties. The DVD specs allows a new title set to have different 'properties'. I will arrange the tracks (using the mouse in the track window, drag to above or below other tracks) in the order of how I want them played back and then, during my menu creation, I'll just specify, 'play next track' for my 'Next play item'. I did this for my episodic DVDs - even when all of them were encoded using the same encoding template. It's easier to manipulate during authoring, as well as playback (jumping from title set to title set using your remote). Also solves minor AV sync issues - creeping audio.
Right now, I'm still guessing about your possible problem. We still do not know if TAW4 actually re-encodes and if so, which one(s)? The easiest way to know this is to follow my previous post and turn on "Preview frequency" to "Preview all possible frames". Do a dummy authoring to HDD, no menu. If you can get back to us with this, we can 'hunt' better.
FYI, the status bar shown for "Output size" is just an extimation. TAW4 tends to be a bit conservative here. What matters is the actual VOB files created. But your observation of a lot of difference in size from the original is a sure indication that something is not right here.
