I was told how to do this once but I forgot some of the steps for editing a video. After I import my AVI and it goes through the bitream thing, do I set Video to MPEG-4 ASp (Xvid4), then do my editing and then save as usual?

One more thing, I've only joined two videos together once before and I don't remember this happening...Right after I appended the two files, I saved it with the AVI extension, then I got a little window that said "You may need Smart Copy. Enable it?" Then it asks me about the Q factor and there's a value to choose. What's this all about? I did not get this the first time I appended two files.

If you are going to use a filter, then change 'Video' from 'Copy' to 'MPEG-4 ASp (Xvid4)' (if you use a filter, the video has to be re-compressed, so you are selecting the codec to use - this is assuming that your AVI is XviD or DivX to begin with).

If you are simply cutting parts, you don't have to change anything.

The Smart Copy deal is (I think) when the audio is detected as VBR.

Thanks, as always, for all your fine help. Hey I made my first ever edit today. Came out ok too!...

Quick question...I noticed that sometimes when viewing video in AVIdemux, that the audio seems a little out of sync, but when I play everything back in WMP or whatever it's fine. Is that just a quirk of AVIdemux?

I haven't seen that behaviour - it would be a drawback inasmuch as the audio 'Shift' feature is used to correct sync problems.
